The Position
The Intermediate Accountant is responsible for managing accurate and timely payroll processing, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. This role handles payroll data entry, deductions, benefits administration, tax filings, reporting, and supports HR and Finance with data reconciliation tasks to maintain operational efficiency and financial integrity. Additionally, the position assists with customer invoice processing, follow-up, and general accounting functions.
You will be part of a motivated and diverse team and will have a high degree of interaction with all employees throughout the organization.
Responsibilities & Activities
- Payroll Processing & Compliance: Accurately process payroll, maintain records, and ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Data Management & Reporting: Gather and verify employee data, timecards, and deductions; generate payroll reports for management, accounting, and regulatory filings (e.g., T4s, ROEs).
- Tax & Remittances: Calculate, process, and reconcile payroll taxes and statutory remittances (e.g., WCB, EHT) in compliance with federal and provincial regulations.
- Accounting & Financial Support: Reconcile payroll transactions, prepare journal entries, assist with audits, and support financial reporting and budgeting processes.
- Employee Communication & Support: Address payroll-related inquiries, communicate policy changes, and collaborate with HR and Finance on compensation, benefits, and labor cost analysis.
- Year-End & Special Processes: Manage year-end tax forms and reconciliations, process terminations and final pay, administer pensions and benefits, and support compliance and planning initiatives.
Qualifications & Skills
- Degree in accounting or related discipline with at least five years of finance or accounting experience; PCP designation or pursuit strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting multi-site operations; waterfront industry experience considered an asset.
- Strong business acumen with advanced analytical and technical accounting skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including conflict resolution and relationship building.
- Proficiency in Office 365 applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and strong organizational/time-management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
- Demonstrated leadership skills to supervise, mentor, and coach staff effectively.
- Proven ability to problem-solve, evaluate performance, and implement solutions to achieve operational and financial goals.
