Position Summary
The Mental Health Counsellor support Longer Term Services by providing clinical assessment, treatment and treatment planning to individuals who present with a mental illness and/or other disabilities (e.g. concurrent, dual diagnosis) that are affecting their day-to-day life. The intent is to ensure client safety and to assist individuals to become self-sufficient in the community in keeping with the principles of recovery.
Essential Job Functions
- Develops and provides psycho educational and clinical groups, including DBT skills and DBT comprehensive;
- Provide evidence-informed screening, assessment, treatments and treatment planning;
- Determines eligibility for CMHA Support within Housing programs via assessments and treatment planning.
- Participates in regular clinical team meetings, housing assessment meetings and DBT consult meetings.
- Partners with other service providers for further program development (e.g. Multicultural Centre, Family Practice Centres, etc.);
- Develops support systems and services within the community including the facilitation of client and family support groups;
- Acts as an advocate for client and mental health programs in the community;
- Participates in the referral and intake process and ensures proper documentation and files are maintained and up to date for each individual;
- Inputs all information into required data systems.
Essential Job Requirements

Successful completion of a university undergraduate degree program in the human service field or accredited community college diploma in the Social Service Worker program;

2 to 3 years of employment experience in the mental health field;

Clinical knowledge and experience in application of clinical therapeutic techniques (i.e. Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) Brief Solution Focus, Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Trauma Informed Care);
-
Registered as either a Registered Social Worker, Registered Social Service Worker, Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or Registered Occupational Therapist and good standing and adheres to all standards of practice as per the College;

Maintain accurate and timely documentation and reports in adherence with Regulatory College and program-specific CMHA Niagara policies, including collective relevant data to evaluate client and meet funder outcomes;

Certified in the following safety courses: Crisis Intervention (i.e. NVCI, Safety Care, CPI or Safe Management), Standard First Aid – CPR C - AED, and Suicide Prevention (ASIST);

Strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills;

Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or verification that you are unable to be vaccinated;

Must have access to a reliable personal vehicle;

Current valid class ‘G’ driver’s license;

A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Screening (Police Check);

Actual life experience and/or lived experience with mental illness or addictions an asset;

Bilingualism, particularly proficiency in French, would be considered a valuable asset.
