Justice and Correctional Services - Corrections Program Officer

Core Functions The Corrections Programs Officer is responsible for providing support with job training and career development outside of the correctional setting. Promote the Cree Reintegration, Education and Employment program (C.R.E.E) and special initiatives available to clients and support the planning and implementation of the department’s strategic action plan and supervising the Corrections Assistant.
Functional Responsibilities
- Support with monitoring and maintaining the department’s Strategic Plan to ensure staff tasks and ongoing research are on schedule and proactively engage with the Manager of Corrections Services when additional support may be needed.
- Compile information from Corrections staff visits to detention centres, penitentiaries and halfway houses for the Corrections team’s annual report to the Director.
- Maintain contact and consult with professionals and other resources as staff needs develop in the execution of tasks regarding the implementation of the strategic plan.
- Liase with the Community Reintegration Officer, C.B.H.S.S.J.B, Apatisiiwin Skills Development (ASD), Cree School Board and other professionals to create partnerships and provide services to the clientele.
- Work closely with ASD to test participants’ readiness for placement and reintegration into the workforce.
- Oversee, organize, and implement training, internships, and mentorship programs.
- Plan the reintegration program and monitor the program’s progress.
- Gather feedback from trainees after each program session.
- Support Correction reintegration office in development of local initiatives.
Reporting Responsibilities
- Receive monthly activity reports from Community Reintegration Officers and other Corrections staff as needed.
- Review and analyze information from all Corrections staff reports and assist colleagues in following up on administrative needs.
- Provide quarterly reports and recommendations to the Manager of Correctional Services on correction services.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Assess program effectiveness and determine impact of training on clienteles’ skills.
- Support the Community Reintegration Officers in the development of local initiatives.
- Gather material and information for the development of promotional tools including photos for the program.
Other Responsibilities
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in area(s) of responsibility.
- Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications Education:
- College Diploma in Administration, Judicial Administration, or a related field.
Experience
- One to three years of relevant work experience.
Language
- Verbal fluency in Cree.
- Fluency in English.
- Fluency in French is an asset.
Knowledge And Abilities
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as fund criteria, proposals, legal and judicial publications.
- Knowledge of program management and development.
- Capable of following guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well both independently and in a team environment.
- Good organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple tasks and respect deadlines.
- Ability to work with highly confidential information.
- Proficiency working with Microsoft Office products.
Additional Requirements
- Typical office setting where there are no unusual physical demands.
- Willingness to travel occasionally.
- Must agree to a criminal and security background check.
The Cree Nation Government may, at its discretion, waive any or all of the aforementioned requirements if a suitable candidate who is a JBNQA beneficiary accepts to follow a training plan determined by the Cree Nation Government as a condition of employment.
