Junior Structural Engineer – Water Business Unit The Junior Structural Engineer is an early-career engineering professional who is within approximately one year of obtaining their Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence in Ontario, or who has recently obtained licensure. Working within Hatch's Water Business Unit, the incumbent supports the planning, analysis, design, and delivery of municipal water and wastewater infrastructure projects, including treatment facilities, pumping stations, reservoirs, tanks, underground chambers, tunnels, shafts, and structures associated with linear conveyance systems. The incumbent is responsible for preparing engineering calculations, technical specifications, reports, and other design deliverables, while coordinating with designers and multidisciplinary project teams. Reporting to a Lead Structural Engineer, Engineering Manager, or Project Manager, the Junior Structural Engineer contributes to the delivery of projects in accordance with scope, budget, schedule, quality, and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Assist senior engineers with the delivery of structural engineering work for water and wastewater infrastructure projects. Prepare structural design calculations, technical reports, specifications, design criteria, and engineering deliverables under supervision. Support the design of reinforced concrete and structural steel structures, including foundations, buildings, tanks, galleries, pipe supports, and other infrastructure components. Participate in site investigations, condition assessments, field inspections, and construction support activities (reviewing shop drawings and RFIs, etc.). Assist in the development of project scopes, cost estimates, schedules, and engineering work plans. Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including civil, mechanical, process, electrical, architectural, and geotechnical disciplines. Participate in design reviews and ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, Hatch procedures, and safety requirements. Utilize structural analysis and design software, including STAAD.Pro and related engineering tools, to perform structural modelling, analysis, and design of concrete and steel infrastructure. Contribute to engineering quality, safety, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited university. Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) and actively progressing toward Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licensure in Ontario, with licensure anticipated within approximately one year; candidates who have recently obtained their P.Eng. designation are also encouraged to apply. 3 to 5 years of relevant structural engineering experience in infrastructure, industrial, or municipal projects. Experience preparing structural designs and engineering deliverables for municipal infrastructure, industrial facilities, or water and wastewater projects. Experience in the design and analysis of reinforced concrete and structural steel structures. Familiarity with Canadian design codes and standards, including CSA A23.3, CSA S16, NBCC, and applicable industry standards. Proficiency with STAAD.Pro and familiarity with other structural analysis and design software. Strong written and verbal communication, organization, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams and under the guidance of senior engineers.
Preferred
Experience with water and wastewater treatment facilities and linear conveyance infrastructure, including reinforced concrete tanks, chambers, and process structures. Familiarity with ACI 350 and CSA S900.2 design standards for environmental concrete structures. Experience or exposure to structural rehabilitation, condition assessment, asset management, and construction support services. Experience with steel and anchored connection design, fabrication, or modular construction methods. Experience with 3D design platforms and BIM-based project delivery environments, including familiarity with Autodesk Revit. Familiarity with masonry design and detailing.
Base salary range: $72,000 - $105,000

In accordance with legislated pay transparency requirements, the expected salary range for this position is based on current market data and aligned with internal pay structures to ensure consistency and fairness.
