About The Role

The Occupational Therapist contributes to the wellness philosophy of Baptist Housing Communities, provides initial assessments, consultations and recommendations regarding the resident’s physical and functional abilities. The Occupational Therapist contributes to the Musculo Skeletal Injury Prevention (MSIP) program for the team members of the Residence and participates as a member of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Team to review team member injuries.

Please note that this is a temporary one-year contract position.

Responsibilities:

Team Leadership

Provides work direction and supervision to the Rehabilitation Assistant. Monitors and evaluates performance of Rehabilitation Assistant on ongoing basis Contributes to the MSIP program by participating as a member of the OHS Team to review team member incident/accident reports, identify incident report trends and provide input to risk identification and reduction Works with clinical education team to plan and present in-services to promote musculo-skeletal injury prevention for team members and residents Promotes by example and by assisting team members, awareness of safe transfer and lifting techniques, including correct usage of transfer and lifting equipment Provides consultation and support to team members returning to work post workplace injury as required Promotes ergonomic consideration in physical planning of work and living space

Program Leadership and resident Support

Provides assessment, consultation and recommendations regarding resident mobility, equipment needs and risk management Offers therapy / therapeutic programs to residents Documents assessments and therapies using the assigned DAR format Works collaboratively with residents and their families in equipment rentals or purchases Encourages residents and team members to seek professional services or access community resources as appropriate Promotes resident’s ability of choices / managed risk

Networks and Relationships

Works in collaboration with external partners as appropriate (i.e., DVA, other ministry funding sources, etc.) Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with residents, team members and partners as required Contributes as a member of the administrative team and the therapy team Maintains relationships with professional peers in the long term care community

Health and Safety

Establishes influences and supports a culture of health and safety Demonstrates safe working practice and encourages other team members to work safely Takes initiative and makes suggestions for health and safety improvements in the workplace Ensures discussions regarding safety topics are a regular part of team meetings Responds appropriately to changing and/or emergency situations in a calm, reassuring manner

Demonstrates a personal alignment with Baptist Housing values and displays an attitude of genuineness, empathy, compassion, respect and understanding Loves the elderly and demonstrates an understanding of the unique needs of seniors Has the desire to serve Has a positive “can do” attitude Is flexible and adaptable to change Must display strong leadership skills, the ability to provide direction and motivate team members Must demonstrate excellent communication skills, both written and oral, as well as negotiating ability Acts at all times in the best interests of the organization Demonstrates an attitude of respect for each person’s individuality, dignity and right to refusal, and confidentiality Current knowledge of physiological changes of geriatric population Knowledge of altered cognitive function (particularly various dementias) Facilitation skills Excellent communication and observation skills Knowledge of managed risk process in response to resident / significant other’s choices Knowledge of assistive equipment Knowledge of computerized and other health related information systems Knowledge of the legal aspects of documentation

Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy with 3-5 years of OT experience in seniors’ care, or Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience Demonstrated experience using progressive and innovative approaches to gerontological rehabilitation and maintenance of strength Current registration with governing body in British Columbia

Compensation and Benefits :

An hourly wage between $45.15 - $56.17.
