DIVISION HEAD CUSTODIAN (FULL TIME – DAY SHIFT) Location: ELM STREET SCHOOL , Medicine Hat, Alberta Schedule: Monday to Friday, 6:30 AM – 12:00 PM / 1:30 PM- 4:00 PM
Hours per Week: 40
Employment Type: Full-Time, Unionized (CUPE)

About The Role We are seeking a reliable and experienced Head Custodian to lead our custodial team and ensure our school facilities are safe, clean, and well-maintained. This position plays a vital role in supporting the educational mission of our school by fostering a positive, healthy, and secure environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate custodial staff and daily cleaning operations
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and safety throughout the facility
- Perform daily building and systems checks
- Conduct minor maintenance and repairs on furniture and equipment
- Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations
- Manage custodial supplies and equipment
- Support event setup/takedown and furniture moves
- Perform seasonal tasks such as snow removal and outdoor maintenance
- Monitor and test facility security and fire alarm systems
- Complete administrative tasks including timesheets, training records, and reports
- Submit service requests using facilities asset management software
- Project a positive image of the school and division
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Custodial Supervisor
What We're Looking For:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid WHMIS, First Aid, and CPR certifications (or willingness to obtain)
- 5th Class ABSA certificate, (or willingness to obtain within 1 year of employment)
- Minimum 6 months of supervisory experience in custodial or building maintenance
- Strong knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment, and safety regulations
- Mechanical aptitude and understanding of building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical)
- Ability to operate custodial equipment and hand tools
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Outlook)
- Effective communication, leadership, and organizational skills
- Physically capable of lifting, bending, climbing, and standing for extended periods
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Police Information Check with Vulnerable Sector and pre-employment testing required

About Peace Wapiti Public School Division
Peace Wapiti Public School Division (PWPSD) provides service to approximately 5,800 Kindergarten to Grade 12 students in 36 schools, including nine Hutterite colony schools, two outreach schools, an online school, and educational programming at a group home facility.
The system provides schooling for students from Horse Lake First Nation and Kelly Lake Indigenous Community. Excluding the colony schools, the smallest school has an enrollment of 34 students and the largest has 623 students. Alternative Education provides flexible programming to 95 students. In the smaller and more rural high schools, some reliance is placed on distance education programs to augment the basic in-school offerings. Specialty programs exist to meet local needs.
PWPSD employs the full-time equivalent of 375 teachers and 600 non-teaching staff, in addition to a number of part-time and casual personnel. The Transportation Department manages 100 bus routes.
