General Description:

We are seeking an innovative, results-driven, and proactive professional to join our team as a Maintenance Manager. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe operation and minimal downtime of all Waste Connections of Canada vehicles. The Maintenance Manager will develop and oversee a Preventative Maintenance Program aimed at reducing vehicle breakdowns, minimizing major repairs, and extending the lifespan of fleet assets.

As a Maintenance Manager with us, the minimum responsibilities are:

  • Develop and manage an annual maintenance budget in alignment with Waste Connections guidelines (e.g., cost per hour based on vehicle age).
  • Lead safety meetings, enforce compliance with safety protocols.
  • Recommend capital expenditures and develop business cases for vehicle, equipment, and tool replacements.
  • Monitor and control maintenance-related expenditures, including tires, parts, repairs, and outsourced services for specialized diagnostics.
  • Oversee work assignments, scheduling, preventative maintenance (PM), and repairs, ensuring efficient shop operations.
  • Monitor labor costs and parts usage by type of repair to achieve appropriate labor costs (standard repair times) and parts usage.
  • Develop and implement a PM schedule, ensuring timely assignments and up-to-date inspections to prevent roadside breakdowns and regulatory issues.
  • Conduct periodic checks to make sure PMs are up to date and trucks are safe to minimize roadside breakdowns and MTO issues.
  • Manage parts inventory, ensuring adequate supply levels while avoiding shortages.
  • Prepare a business case for modifications that are good investments, or for safety
  • Maintain parts ordering system and inventory replenishment (e.g. adequate supply without shortages).
  • Purchase parts and materials; source the desired quality at the best price.
  • Reconcile and approve invoices for maintenance-related purchases.
  • Participate in joint health and safety committee.
  • Maintain WSIB forms,
  • Periodically audit safety programs and inspect facility (e.g., lock outs, exit lights, extinguishers).
  • Recruit, train, and manage mechanics and welders, ensuring a skilled workforce capable of accurate diagnostics and high-quality repairs.
  • Provide coaching and leadership to the maintenance team, fostering a culture of efficiency, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Address employee relations matters, including performance management, discipline, and grievance resolution.

What We Need From You:

  • Minimum 3+ years of experience as a Maintenance Manager, with a proven track record of developing and implementing preventative maintenance and asset replacement programs.
  • Strong knowledge of heavy-duty trucks is essential.
  • Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic license is an asset.
  • Knowledge of waste management industry is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant trades experience (e.g., mechanic, welder) is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with container shops and welding is an advantage.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to read, interpret, estimate, calculate, and document maintenance-related data.
  • Proficiency with computers and technology.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively manage and develop a high-performing team.
  • Must be able to pass all pre-employment requirements
