Salary: MSU Band D (Steps 1-8): $27.671 - $40.242 per hour. $50,361 - $73,240 per annum (Based on 35 hours per week). Please note: rates will increase by 3% effective July 1, 2026, in accordance with the collective agreement.

MacEwan University is seeking an Accessibility Assistant for a 10-month, full-time replacement term opportunity with our Student Wellness Services Department. You will facilitate access for students with disabilities through professional practice and collaboration with the MacEwan University community. Your role is to provide assistive services, to facilitate the provision of the academic accommodations, and to develop and/or facilitate various types of training sessions and/or other supportive resources.

Key responsibilities include:

Interacting with students to properly assess, report on, make real-time adjustments and present accommodations; Supporting students in completing classroom tasks, or under the student's direction, carries out in-class and laboratory tasks that the student cannot perform independently or easily; Providing note taking or transcriptions for assignments and/or assists students in recruiting peer note-takers; Facilitating access to assistive technologies, including providing support with assistive technology set up, providing or sourcing training, and/or supporting day-to-day use; Providing mobility assistance and physical assistance such as fine motor support while the individual is on campus; Providing social coaching and support to students by navigating and demonstrating appropriate in class behaviour or behavioural cues to best interact with course content; Supporting, modelling, and teaching academic strategy skills, time management, and organizational tactics; Designing, developing, and maintaining student skill-related training materials and supporting reference materials including time management, organizational support, study skills instruction; Creating, maintaining, and updating a repository of resources such as service records and other procedural documentation for ADR staff to reference in SharePoint, and applying knowledge of current best practices to ensure resources are current and relevant; Delivering one-on-one skill sessions and supporting reference materials to individuals with accommodations who require support; Supporting students to learn the library research process; Offering guidance to students on how to access institutional and external disability resources, provides referrals and collaborates with on campus partners; Partnering with students to problem solve barriers they may be experiencing; Assisting with preparation of communications to students which include digital resources, orientation to services, bulletin boards, email messaging, and presentations; and Participating in meetings, committees, and activities with Access and Disability Resources, Student Affairs, and other on campus partners.

An understanding of disability-related challenges, accommodation needs and best practices for inclusive education; Creative and effective problem solving skills; Empathy and intercultural competence in working with stakeholders of diverse backgrounds and abilities; Excellent customer service and the ability to interact with a diverse range of individuals professionally and respectfully, while exercising discretion, sound judgment, and tact; The ability to remain calm and professional in challenging circumstances; The ability to support individuals experiencing emotional distress effectively and address/redirect disruptive behaviours; Strong word processing skills including keyboarding; Proficiency with standard computer technology and specialized assistive technology including, but not limited to text to speech, enlargement, accessibility tools, voice recognition, etc; Effective written and oral communication skills with a professional and friendly approach; Flexibility in a work environment that is subject to frequent change; The ability to contribute to a team environment while taking initiative and working collaboratively with minimal supervision; The ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive information; and A commitment to fostering a collaborative working and learning environment.

Qualifications

A minimum of an educational assistant certificate or diploma in a related field. A minimum of 5 years of related experience supporting individuals in the human services field, including experience with assistive technologies and disability accessibility tools. Experience working with people with disabilities would be considered an asset. Experience working in a post-secondary environment would be considered an asset. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Position Requirements

This position is on campus only. The ability to work flexible hours, which may include early mornings and evenings.
