The Opportunity Are you passionate about people and ready to grow your career in employee and union relations? We are seeking a Junior Specialist to provide support to Atira’s three business units — AWRS, ADS, and AWAS. This is a developmental role designed for someone with a growth mindset who is eager to learn and progress toward a Specialist role.

What You’ll Do Working under the guidance of the Senior Labor Relations Specialist (or designate), you will:

Assist preparing performance management documentation and support managers in understanding processes and expectations.

Assist with workplace investigations including coordinate interviews and prepare supporting materials.

Maintain accurate records, update tracking systems, and ensure documentation is complete and organized.

Support the creation and delivery of training materials and resources.

Collaborate with the broader People & Culture (P&C) team, Payroll and Operations, and provide responsive support to the organization on Labor Relation matters.

What You Bring Strong organizational skills, accuracy, and the ability to manage multiple tasks.

Fact-finding and investigative skills, with a willingness to learn advanced techniques.

Ability to assess situations objectively, apply critical thinking, and make informed, logical decisions

Ability to apply a high level of confidentiality and exercise discretion

Clear and professional communication skills.

A growth mindset, openness to feedback, and enthusiasm for professional development.

Ability to build positive relationships and work respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, including BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+, First Nations, newcomers, and individuals with disabilities.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, Business Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1–2 years of HR experience with exposure to employee and union relations (e.g., supporting investigations, attending grievance meetings as note-taker, preparing documentation, assisting with performance management), preferably in a unionized environment.
  • Familiarity with HRIS systems (e.g., UKG/UltiPro), ticketing/tracking systems, and a demonstrated interest in professional development with a desire to progress within Employee and Union Relations toward a Specialist position.
  • Covid-19 (including booster) & flu vaccinations are recommended
  • All positions are subject to a criminal record check (paid by Atira), including a vulnerable sector check.

Our mission at Atira Women's Resource Society is twofold: to provide direct services to women and children fleeing violence, and to raise awareness of all forms of gendered violence through education and advocacy.

Since 1983, Atira has offered safe and supportive housing to women and children impacted by violence, as well as a range of services in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, Burnaby, Surrey, White Rock, and Richmond.

These services include: long-term and transitional housing, shelter programs, housing outreach and homelessness prevention programs, outreach to senior women and First Nations, Metis and Inuit women affected by violence, support for parents and children who witness abuse, legal support, Stopping the Violence counseling, the 16-step program, and self-employment initiatives.

Our programs are accessible to anyone who identifies and lives full time as a woman and who experiences gendered violence and misogyny, including trans, two spirit and intersex women and or those who identify with a femme of centre non-binary gender.

Critical to the development of our programs and services, Atira's work is informed by the understanding that women's experience of violence often intersects with poverty, racism, substance use, and lack of support for mothering. We also recognize that in addition to providing safety and respect, all of our programs must invite and encourage women’s collaboration and that women must have the opportunity to be active participants in all of our services.
