Position Snapshot

Clarington is growing and our workforce is, too!

The Municipality of Clarington, Public Services Department provides support for participants who require additional assistance to be successful attending programs. We are looking for dynamic, thoughtful, and resourceful staff to support participants with exceptionalities and provide a safe and enjoyable environment for our seasonal recreation programs. This position reports to the Supervisor, Community Programs – Recreation and Inclusion. Recreation programs operate from September 2025 to June 2026.

What you’ll be doing

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Program planning and implementing daily program activities; suggesting / implementing program and environmental adaptations to create an inclusive environment.
  • Daily supervision and interacting with participants providing 1:1 or 1:2 support to ensure they have a positive experience through the adaptation of planned activities to provide participants with an inclusive experience supporting their involvement in all activities.
  • Ensuring the safety of participants at all times.
  • Collecting accurate attendance figures daily and maintaining weekly statistics.
  • Communicating effectively with co-workers and supervisors. Ongoing effective communication with the families / guardians of participants of inclusion program (as applicable) to discuss participant needs and strategies for success.
  • When necessary, assist participants with self-care needs (children’s programs only). Examples of self-care include but are not limited to toileting, changing of clothes and / or diapers, feeding (enforcing specialized diets, hand over hand, opening packages, spoon feeding).
  • Other duties as assigned.

What you bring

The successful candidate:

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 16 years of age and exhibit maturity, responsibility, and leadership qualities.
  • Experience working in a recreation setting with people of all ages with exceptionalities.
  • Experience developing and implementing programming for participants to provide inclusion of all participants, including those with exceptionalities, in programs.
  • Currently enrolled in a related field is an asset (i.e. Educational Assistant, Nursing, Recreation and Leisure Studies, Therapeutic Recreation, Developmental Services Support Worker, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service.
  • Proof of current Standard First Aid and CPR “C” certification would be an asset at time of interview. Successful candidates must obtain a Standard First Aid and CPR “C” certificate at employee’s expense.
  • Certificate in High 5 Principles of Healthy Child Development (PHCD) would be an asset at time of interview. Successful candidates must obtain a PHCD certificate at employee’s expense.
  • Current Behaviour Management Systems certification is an asset.
  • Must be able to legally work in Canada.

What we offer

  • Rate of pay: $19.14 per hour (2025 rate).
  • Hours of work: Successful candidates will be required to complete scheduled training prior to the start of programs and must be able to work daytime, evenings and weekends, up to a maximum 24 hours per week.

Additional Requirements

A current (within the last 180 days) satisfactory criminal reference check, from a Canadian Police Information Centre. Applicants who have been employed with the Municipality within the last year and have provided a criminal reference check within the last 365 days are exempt from providing another criminal reference check. Successful candidates will be required to provide a CPIC every two years at their own cost.
