About the role

The Automation Control Specialist is responsible for maintaining, improving, and supporting automated production systems. This role involves close collaboration with maintenance, engineering, and production teams to ensure equipment reliability, efficiency, and safety.

Key activities

  • Automation & Control Systems:

  • Design, program, commission, and maintain PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems.

  • Implement and optimize control logic for packaging lines, fillers, UHT systems, CIP loops, homogenizers, and conveyors.

  • Integrate control systems with MES/ERP platforms to enable data collection and performance tracking.

  • Collaborate with Tetra Pak Field Service Engineers to identify process bottlenecks, implement software/hardware upgrades, and optimize production line performance.

  • Process Instrumentation & Support:

  • Calibrate and maintain field instruments (pressure, flow, temperature, level sensors, control valves).

  • Perform PID loop tuning and control optimization.

  • Support predictive and preventive maintenance programs for automation assets.

  • Troubleshooting & System Reliability.

  • Diagnose and correct PLC/HMI/communication faults to minimize downtime.

  • Analyze trends and alarm histories to prevent repeat issues.

  • Lead or assist with root-cause analysis for all failures.

  • Project Execution & Continuous Improvement:

  • Participate in capital projects, retrofits, and new equipment commissioning.

  • Develop and maintain automation documentation (schematics, I/O lists, code backups).

  • Champion best practices in safety, control standards, and cybersecurity.

  • Work with Tetra Pak Field Service Engineers and internal engineering to benchmark line performance, implement software enhancements, and reduce waste and energy consumption.

  • Training & Collaboration:

  • Provide technical guidance and hands-on training to maintenance and operations teams.

  • Perform Mechanic 2 duties and support cross-functional problem-solving and process improvements as needed.

Required Training And Experience

  • Diploma or degree in Electrical, Automation, Control Systems, Mechatronics or Instrumentation, Engineering.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in facility maintenance, preferably in a food or beverage manufacturing environment.
  • Proven experience with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix/CompactLogix, Factory Talk View, or equivalent systems.
  • Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) designation is preferred.
  • Prior experience working with or alongside Tetra Pak packaging and process systems strongly preferred.
  • Certifications from ISA, Rockwell Automation, or Siemens are considered assets.
  • Forklift operation experience is required.

Specific Conditions Regarding The Position

  • Physically capable of lifting and moving heavy items, including loading salt into brine tanks.
  • Comfortable working at heights up to 40 feet using safety cages or single-man lifts.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts or respond outside regular hours when needed.
  • Successful completion of the 90-day familiarization period.
  • Successful completion of the progressive skills report.
