The Department of Emergency Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, University of Alberta, in partnership with Alberta Health Services, Edmonton Zone, is inviting applications for a full-time Academic Emergency Physician at the Assistant Professor level, with expertise in emergency medicine, and neuroscience and mental health.
Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions and has been internationally recognized among the world’s top 50 medical schools. The University of Alberta has been ranked amongst the top 100 teaching and research universities in the world serving over 39,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff. The Department of Emergency Medicine, within the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, is a growing research and education-focused Department, currently consisting of 5 Full-Time Academic Faculty and over 200 Clinical Faculty. The Department has a fully accredited Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada residency program (5 years) and it works very closely and supports the University of Alberta Department of Family Medicine’s College of Family Physicians of Canada CFPC-Emergency Medicine program. The Department also offers clinical experience to medical students and residents from other training programs during their mandatory emergency medicine rotations. Research groups within the Department are heavily involved in evidence-based medicine and have produced high-quality evidence through primary research for over 25 years. Knowledge synthesis and mobilization activities have provided a platform from which to exchange valuable information that has been used to improve the quality of care delivered to emergency patients in Alberta, nationally, and internationally.

The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry is one of the world’s top academic health science centres. With 21 departments, multiple research institutes and centres, and a focus on excellence in education, research, and clinical care, the faculty trains outstanding medical and dental professionals and drives global health innovation in collaboration with partners across sectors.
Key accountabilities of the Assistant Professor will include, but will not be limited to leadership in the educational portfolio, educational scholarship and research theses of crisis resource management, human factors, neuroscience, mental health and quality and safety.
This recruitment aims to fulfill the Department’s growing educational and research priorities. This position will provide leadership in the educational portfolio. This position will primarily focus on education (and education leadership and scholarship) as a dominant theme with a substantial contribution to research. The selected candidate will be expected to support and foster development of the education portfolio in the department, including innovative curriculum development.
The successful candidate will be a physician (MD) certified in emergency medicine by either the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC-Emergency Medicine) or the College of the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC-Emergency Medicine), and be eligible for licensure with College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). The ideal candidate will have received advanced training in epidemiology, neuroscience or related health research methods (i.e., graduate studies programs [Masters or PhD]).

Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic Medicine & Health Services Program (AMHSP). Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenure-track appointment in the Department of Emergency Medicine, with the rank of Assistant Professor, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement*, and offers a comprehensive* benefits package*.*
