TheData Engineeris responsible for designing, owning, and evolving the data and analytics infrastructure that underpins the CIO Office’s portfolio analytics, ALM, trade quantification, and risk dashboards. The role ensures that front office investment decisions are supported by reliable, transparent, and scalable data and systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Data Architecture & Ownership

• Design and maintain the end-to-end data architecture supporting: Portfolio holdings and transactions /Market data (rates, curves, spreads, credit metrics) /Liability and discount curve inputs /Risk, capital, and scenario data.
• Ensure alignment and consistency between investment, ALM, risk, actuarial, and finance data views.

Analytics System Enablement

• Own the data and system layer supporting: Discount curve analytics /ALM mismatch analysis /Trade quantification tools /Balance sheet/Surplus and capital analytics.
• Partner with Portfolio Analytics analysts to ensure systems are fit for purpose, flexible, and front office usable.
• Translate analytical requirements into scalable system and data solutions.

Dashboard & Reporting Infrastructure

• Design and support the data pipelines and structures powering front office dashboards.
• Ensure dashboards are consistent, performant, and transparent, with clear data lineage.
• Support real time or near real time analytics where required for CIO Office workflows.

Data Governance, Quality & Controls

• Define data standards, validation rules, and quality controls for analytics critical datasets.
• Implement reconciliation, exception monitoring, and auditability for key metrics.
• Ensure analytical outputs are reproducible and defensible for senior management and governance forums.
• Support model and data documentation to meet internal risk and regulatory expectations.

Data Integration

• Manage integration with external data vendors and systems (e.g., market data providers, portfolio systems, risk platforms).
• Partner with enterprise Technology teams on platform while maintaining front office agility.
• Oversee data enhancements, system upgrades, and strategic tooling decisions affecting analytics.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Finance, or a related quantitative field.
• 3+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics systems, or front office technology, preferably within insurance, asset management, or financial institutions.
• Strong programming and data engineering skills (e.g., Python, SQL).
• Experience designing data models and pipelines for analytics and reporting.
• Familiarity with market data, portfolio systems, and risk platforms.
• Experience supporting dashboard and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Python based dashboards).
• Understanding of data governance, controls, and auditability in a regulated environment.

Salary:

$69,000.00 - $129,000.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
