We are currently hiring an Art Director to join our Toronto studio!
Reporting to: Producer
Purpose: Why you’re here at Brown Bag Films
o To lead the visual direction and design concepts of a production including characters and
environments. Working in collaboration with the Client, Producer and Director to achieve the highest quality for broadcast.
Delivery: What you produce
o Complete design and visual direction of the property
o Visually approved final episodes.
Measurements: How we measure it
o Meets creative requirements, within agreed scope and schedule
o Client/Director approvals
o 360 feedback from Director, Producer and supervisors.
Key Responsibilities
What you are regularly responsible for doing:
o Guide the development of character, environment, and overall visual design.
o Collaborate with creative leads to unify artistic direction across all elements.
o Providing visual direction and leadership across departments from Character/Prop design, Layout, BG Paint, and Visual Development e.g. Funpack, both character and environment to deliver cohesive and high-quality visuals throughout the production pipeline.
o Maintain visual consistency with the established style, brand identity and narrative tone.
o Undertaking approvals at all stages, including Comp and FX and final visual edit/grade in postproduction.
o Providing clear direction in the form of notes or Photoshop mark-ups both to internal and external teams.
o Working closely with Director and Animation Directors/Leads to find the best solutions for technical challenges
o Working closely with Client, Producer and Director to achieve the highest quality for broadcast and to ensure the production stays within agreed assumptions.
o Collaborating with Department Leads/Supervisors to maintain awareness of the schedule milestones
o Collaborate with Pipeline Team to optimize workflow.
o Completing tasks assigned by DOPs/VP of Production.
Key Requirements
Things that help you do your job (what is essential & what is desirable)
Knowledge:
o Strong knowledge in art and design with a focus on Animation and Storytelling.
o Strong understanding of diverse art styles and visual languages, with the ability to adapt and apply them effectively to suit project needs.
o Strong artistic sensibility developed by training (self-taught or formal qualification).
Experience:
o Extensive experience in animation production environments, across multiple series and at least 1-2 first season where the foundational visual style was established.
o Demonstrate the ability to lead and adapt through all creative phases from concept development to final delivery.
o Experience managing a team in a production environment.
Technical skills:
o Expert of the 2D pipeline.
o Drawing & painting within an animation environment.
o Expert in Photoshop.
o Proficient in 2D Harmony skills
