Job Description

Accountabilities:

  • Performs and provides microscopic interpretation of gram stains, TB stains and other differentiating stains

  • Operation and maintenance of the microbiology analyzers and equipment

  • Identifies, interprets and reports significant findings from infection control surveillance swabs and clinical specimens

  • Knowledge and/or experience of blood cultures, rapid diagnostic kits and PCR

  • Report significant findings and reportable diseases to the appropriate health care providers (e.g. physician, infection control practitioners, public health unit, etc.)

  • Validation of inventory, supplies and new products

  • Recognition, isolation, and identification of significant organisms; performs sensitivity testing

  • Disposes of biohazard waste according to protocols

  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Medical Laboratory Technologist with CSMLS certification

  • Minimum two years recent experience in a hospital microbiology setting

  • Current registration with CMLTO in good standing

  • Ability to recognize microorganisms using colonial and cellular morphology (gram stains)

  • Distinguish colours and recognize smells pertinent to organism identification

  • Familiar with serological and biochemical reactions that aid in identification of microorganisms

  • Working knowledge of specimen set-up protocols and processing in microbiology

  • Must be authorized to practice in the CMLTO specialty microbiology

  • Strong multi-tasking, critical thinking and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

  • Proven ability to be a team player; strong interpersonal skills

  • Must demonstrate Osler's Values of Respect, Excellence, Service, Compassion, Innovation and Collaboration

  • Excellent attendance, punctuality and work ethic

  • May be required to travel between and work at all Osler sites

Additional Information

Hours: Days/Evenings/Nights including weekends and statutory holidays (Saturdays to Wednesdays)
(subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)

SALARY:
Minimum: $36.85 per hour
Maximum: $50.27 per hour
