Food Service Worker - Mirrors Supportive Housing

About the role

Beacon is hiring for our purpose-built low-barrier supportive housing facility for youth participants aged 19-27. The Mirrors building will provide wraparound 24/7 support for 48 participants who are precariously housed or experiencing homelessness.

The goal of Mirrors is to use a collaborative, strength-based perspective that recognizes the individual skills, talents, and needs of our residents. In collaboration with community resources, Mirrors will provide life and living skills, two meals a day and a safe and welcoming environment to help give youth a stable home.

We are seeking passionate, community-minded individuals to join our team and set the foundation for youth to enter self-sustainable, independent housing when it is their time to exit the program.

Location: 1075Meares Street, Victoria

Days/hours of work: Four days per week 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. (16 Hours per week)

Union: BCGEU Stand Alone

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Cook, the Food Service Worker is responsible for preparing and providing fresh homemade meals during their shift to young adults in the building. Acting as a role model, they will share their passion for food while providing a home-like, reassuring environment that encourages participant engagement and includes participants' personal preferences. PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepare food and use a menu created by the Cook which includes two daily meals that meet Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating requirements
  • Serve family-style meals and strives to make meals appealing and mealtimes enjoyable
  • Maintain kitchen, dining room and food storage areas in a tidy, hygienic and safe manner
  • Monitors food storage and stand times and temperatures according to licensing requirements. Maintains sanitation of food preparation areas.
  • Orders food supplies and related products as needed
  • Maintains adequate supply of tools and equipment for food preparation, service and dining.
  • Encourages and works with other team members to facilitate youth participation when required
  • Documents and updates all relevant information according to site procedures
  • Performs other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Previous experience working in a commercial kitchen
  • Completion of a foundational culinary arts program is considered an asset
  • Previous experience in a supportive housing environment and or previous food service establishment experience is an asset
  • FOODSAFE Certificate
  • First Aid with CPR Certificate
  • Overdose Prevention Training

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work quickly, safely and efficiently in a commercial kitchen
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to organize work and operate related equipment
  • Ability to interact effectively with residents, families, co-workers, members of the multidisciplinary team and the public
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position
