Calgary, AB (hybrid considered) Reports To Controller Employment Type Full-time, permanent Entities Zeno Renewables / Zeno Energy About Us Zeno Renewables is an Alberta-based solar installation company that has been in business for over 11 years, with more than 5,200 installations and 50MW deployed across residential and commercial projects. We are also building Zeno Energy, a related utility company offering electricity and natural gas plans to Albertans. Our finance team supports both entities and plays a central role in how we operate and grow.
The Role
We are looking for an Intermediate Accountant to join our finance team and support our Controller with the day-to-day accounting operations across both Zeno entities. This role exists to free up our Controller to focus on higher-level financial management, project costing oversight, and reporting to leadership. You will be the engine behind the transactional work that keeps our books clean and our close process on track.
What You Will Be Doing
DAY-TO-DAY ACCOUNTING
- Managing full-cycle accounting across both entities
- Performing bank and credit card reconciliations and maintaining accrual account reconciliations and working papers
- Maintaining the general ledger and posting journal entries as needed
- Supporting the month-end close process and ensuring transactions are coded accurately PROJECT AND MULTI-ENTITY SUPPORT
- Tracking project costs in QuickBooks using class or project tracking, supporting visibility into job-level performance
- Managing transactions across two entities (Zeno Renewables and Zeno Energy) with accuracy and clarity
- Working within our AP payment platforms to process vendor payments in a timely manner TOOLS AND PROCESS
- Using Dext for bill and receipt capture, coding, and QuickBooks sync
- UKG Ready for payroll and HR functions
- Maintaining organized digital records and supporting audit-ready documentation
- Identifying process inefficiencies and flagging them to the Controller with suggested improvements
What We Are Looking For
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
- CPA Designation with one to three years of full-cycle accounting experience post-designation, ideally in a project-based or trade/contracting environment and/or public accounting experience
- Hands-on experience with QuickBooks, particularly at the class or project tracking level
- Exposure to multi-entity bookkeeping is a strong asset SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES
- Strong attention to detail with a track record of accurate, timely work
- Comfortable working in a fast-moving environment where some processes are still being built
- Proactive communicator who raises issues early rather than waiting for the period close to surface them
- Problem-solving mindset to approach issues with a framework for resolution
- Genuinely curious about improving processes and workflows NICE TO HAVE
- Experience with Dext or similar AP/payment automation tools
- Background in the solar, construction, or utilities industry
- Familiarity with Alberta and Federal tax and regulatory requirements
- Involvement in an ERP or accounting system implementation or migration (e.g., data conversion, testing, go-live support)
- Experience mapping business processes and leading walkthroughs to identify control gaps or inefficiencies
- Internal control documentation specifically related to IT general controls and management review controls
- HubSpot familiarity
