About the role

The Canadian Light Source (CLS) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules, and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions, working on everything from dinosaur skins to mine remediation and from cancer treatments to cutting-edge electronics.

CLSI is now accepting applications for an Electrical Engineer. Reporting to the Electrical Engineering Lead, the Electrical Engineer will be responsible for supporting the technical design, implementation, and maintenance of systems for the CLS facility. The successful candidate will demonstrate a high degree of professionalism and will possess the ability to effectively communicate and function as part of a highly skilled engineering group.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed electrical designs (process and instrumentation diagrams, single line diagrams, detailed schematics, PLC logic and code, panel schedules, and installation plans) to support the design and development of accelerators, beamlines, and facility services.

  • Areas of design work will include electrical power distribution, motion control of precision equipment, PLC based control systems, lighting, writing specifications for tender documents, specifying equipment and initiating purchase orders, ensuring compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code, National Building Code, and other related codes and standards.

  • Participate in many aspects of synchrotron design, modernization, operations, and maintenance.

  • Prepare work plans, schedules, and cost estimates for assigned tasks and ensures timely completion

  • Prepare written documentation such as specifications, procedures, reports, drawings and other technical documentation

Qualifications:

  • University degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Minimum of four years’ relevant post-degree engineering work experience.

  • Eligible for professional membership in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS).

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Experience in design, construction, and maintenance of electrical distribution systems and distributed control systems in an industrial facility.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code including requirements for protection, motors, starters, transformers, wiring methods, and grounding.
  • Experience with arc flash and coordination studies using ETAP or similar software
  • Experience in the design of motion control systems using stepper and servo motors.
  • Programming of PLC-based control systems.
  • Experience with safety rated systems would be an asset.

Alternate Skills/Experience given Consideration:

  • Experience with cooling water systems in a process plant setting

  • Experience with refrigeration and/or cryogenic systems

  • Experience with HVAC systems in a process plant setting

  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards for electrical design

Compensation: Starting salary range is $80,000-$90,000 for PEng candidates and will be based on experience. (Starting salary would be different for those who are EITs—more information can be provided upon request).
