Position Overview: The Field Survey Technologist works primarily in the field under the direction of a Project Manager and/or Land Surveyor, supporting a wide range of survey projects including legal, topographic, right‑of‑way, construction layout, monitoring, and work on First Nation lands.
This role leads day‑to‑day survey activities at project sites, supervises Field Survey Assistants, and ensures work is completed safely and accurately in accordance with established standards. As a COR‑certified organization, Aplin Martin places a strong emphasis on health and safety, supported by clear procedures, training, and a proactive safety culture. The Field Survey Technologist collaborates closely with multidisciplinary teams while utilizing modern survey technologies such as UAVs, GNSS, and laser scanning.
Key Duties and Responsibilities Perform legal, topographic, right‑of‑way, construction layout, as‑built, and engineering surveys. Lead on‑site survey operations and supervise Field Survey Assistants. Collect data using data collectors, robotic total stations, GNSS receivers, and related technologies. Prepare accurate field notes, sketches, and documentation. Verify data accuracy and compliance with standards and project specifications. Perform field calculations, checks, and troubleshooting. Upload, download, and organize survey data daily. Assist with planning, scheduling, and coordination of field activities. Maintain survey vehicles, equipment, and tools. Interact professionally with clients, contractors, landowners, and stakeholders. Assist with training and mentoring junior staff. Follow all Aplin Martin safety procedures and complete daily FLHAs, monthly vehicle inspections. Clear vegetation and debris as required, for accurate measurements. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Skills and Professional Development Skills and Experience Diploma in Survey Technology and/or 3–5 years of experience in a legal survey environment. Strong working knowledge of robotic total stations, GNSS, and modern survey technologies. Demonstrated UAV survey experience; Transport Canada Advanced Drone Certificate is an asset. Experience with 3D laser scanning is an asset. Familiarity with Trimble equipment and Trimble Business Center is required. Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. High level of dependability, technical competence, and attention to detail. Ability to work outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions. Physically capable of handling survey equipment. Valid Alberta driver’s licence with a clean driving record.
