Role Description The Mechanical Construction Estimator is a full-time, on-site role based in the Greater Calgary Metropolitan Area. This role will primarily be responsible for preparing accurate and detailed cost estimates for commercial and industrial plumbing and heating mechanical projects, and related systems. Day-to-day tasks include reviewing drawings and specifications, performing quantity take-offs, analyzing labor, material, and subcontractor costs, and preparing bid proposals and budgets. The estimator collaborates closely with project managers, engineers, coordinators, and field technicians to clarify scope, identify cost-saving options, and ensure estimates align with project requirements and safety standards. The role also involves maintaining current pricing data, tracking market trends, and supporting contract negotiations and project handover to operations.
Qualifications
3-5 years of mechanical estimating skills, including experience with quantity take-offs, cost analysis, and preparing detailed bids for HVAC and mechanical construction projects. Solid technical understanding of commercial and industrial plumbing & heating systems (e.g., boilers, rooftop units, heat pumps, VRF/VFV, refrigeration) and associated construction practices. Proficiency with estimating and project management software (Procore, Trimble Estimation/QuickPen, Bluebeam Revu) as well as general computer skills using spreadsheets, word processing, and digital documentation tools. Effective analytical, problem-solving, and math skills for evaluating drawings, specifications, and complex project data. Strong written and verbal communication skills for coordinating with clients, suppliers, and internal teams, and for preparing clear proposals and reports. Ability to work on-site, manage multiple estimates simultaneously, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail in a fast-paced environment. Relevant education or training in mechanical engineering technology, construction management, or related field experience/ journeyman ticket; equivalent experience in mechanical construction estimating is strongly valued. Familiarity with safety standards and COR-related practices in the Alberta construction sector; previous experience in commercial or industrial mechanical contracting is an asset.
