As the Ministry of Forestry and Parks we are responsible for fostering Alberta’s environmentally responsible forest management practices, including management of wildfires. We preserve our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans. As well as enabling access to public lands for recreational and commercial purposes while prioritizing conservation. Forestry and Parks also manages public lands and balances sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers.

In this role, you will report to the Manager of Business Services and provide strategic fiscal oversight and advanced analysis across five branches within Forestry and Parks. You will champion standardization and efficiency in budget management and financial operations, ensuring timely, accurate reporting that empowers senior leaders to make informed decisions.

As a key contributor, you will align financial practices with government priorities while delivering both strategic guidance and practical support—helping the ministry achieve operational excellence and long-term success.

Key responsibilties:

  • Leading budget forecasting, financial reporting, and expenditure monitoring across multiple branches.

  • Developing and implementing operational policies, procedures, and internal controls to enhance financial accountability.

  • Advisising senior leaders, including Assistant Deputy Ministers, on budget management strategies and fiscal performance.

  • Preparing divisional budget reports, capital forecasts, and in-depth variance analyses.

  • Coordinating fiscal analysis on policy, program, and operational initiatives.

  • Identifying evaluating, and implementing improvements to financial tools, systems, and methodologies.

  • Responding to ad hoc financial requests and generating actionable insights through statistical and pivot-based analysis.

  • Guiding year-end and quarterly financial processes, including accruals and inter-unit transactions.

  • Providing mentorship to Financial Analysts and Officers to build internal capability.

  • Developing and delivering workshops to ensure compliance with GAAP, GoA directives, and audit best practices.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • A degree( 4 year) in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration; or

  • A related field plus 4 years experience in budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and reporting; or

  • A 2 year diploma in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration and 6 years related experience.

Equivalency:

Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of: one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.

Special Requirements:

  • In-depth understanding of financial legislation, policies, and accounting principles (e.g., GAAP).

  • Experience working in complex organizational or governance environments.

Assets:

  • CPA or equivalent professional accounting designation.

  • Advanced Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, statistical analysis, data visualization).

  • Knowledge of Government of Alberta financial systems and standards.

  • Experience presenting to senior leadership and facilitating cross-functional financial projects.

  • Strong analytical thinking to assess financial data, identify trends, and offer impactful recommendations.

  • Excellent communication skills to clearly convey complex financial insights to executive audiences.

  • A collaborative mindset to build relationships and work across diverse program areas and stakeholders.

  • Proven leadership and mentorship capabilities to support team growth and knowledge-sharing.

  • Initiative and innovation to identify efficiencies and proactively resolve systemic financial challenges.

  • Attention to detail to ensure accuracy, compliance, and alignment with government financial standards.

This is a permanent, full-time role with 36.25 work hours/week, Monday to Friday.

The candidates may be asked to complete a written assignment as a part of the interview process.
