Responsibilities Job Description:

  • Provides excellent physical and emotional care for hospice residents in collaboration with the Registered Nurse.
  • Monitors the safety and the care of hospice residents at all times.
  • Provides the basic care of residents including bathing, dressing, and grooming residents and attending to personal needs.
  • Addresses the physical, emotional and psychological needs of all residents; assists in ensuring that spiritual needs are met as appropriate by following The Salvation Army's values of hope, service, dignity, and stewardship.
  • Completes designated cleaning tasks including: equipment, beds, resident rooms, and kitchenette.
  • Assesses equipment integrity and charges equipment batteries.
  • Assists the Registered Nurse with post-mortem care.
  • Reports to the Registered Nurse any changes in resident condition, unmanaged symptoms, any skin or mouth concerns.
  • Documents all care provided in a timely fashion prior to the end of the shift.
  • Sits at the front desk of the Nursing Station to answer door/phone for the Unit Clerk if requested.
  • Works as a part of a team, assisting co-workers after completing their own assigned tasks.
  • Participates in staff meetings, in-services, interdisciplinary rounds, special projects.
  • Attends all compulsory education sessions as required to maintain knowledge and expertise.

Qualifications

  • Personal Care Attendant or Health Care Aide Certificate Required; must be actively registered with Health Care Aide Directory of Alberta
  • Grade 12 education or equivalent preferred;
  • Fluent in English language, oral and written.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR;
  • Prefer a minimum of one-year experience caring for persons requiring physical, emotional, social and spiritual support in a palliative setting;
  • Previous experience caring for persons with cancer and life-limiting illnesses an asset.

Skills And Abilities

  • Understands universal precautions to prevent exposure to health hazards in treating residents;
  • Knowledgeable in good body mechanics; position requires considerable lifting, bending, and walking to move residents
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain a positive working attitude and relationships with all members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Well-developed organizational and time management skills;
  • Able to work as an effective team member including problem solving in a collaborative manner;
  • Demonstrates a flexible, professional attitude with a willingness to work and maintain competency;
  • Is receptive to change and adapts accordingly.

Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $21.86 to $23.94 with a maximum of $26.02.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
