About the role
Job Description The Lead Project Controller is accountable to the Project Controls Manager for the planning and performance monitoring of project performance within a particular business unit and to optimize the efficient and profitable implementation of these projects. The incumbent must be able to understand contracts, subcontracts, track daily, weekly and monthly project performance, incorporate quantitative and qualitative analysis, and to define both the physical and the economic performance of the projects and recommend action to be taken should deviations from the optimal performance be highlighted.
The incumbent will provide leadership, development and direction to subordinate staff members to ensure that the business objectives of the Company are consistently achieved. The Lead Project Controller must be conversant in the discipline of project management, oversee the development, implementation and maintenance of project baselines, project execution plans, execution of contracts, inclusive of overseeing the setup of project administrative aspects.
Bilingual proficiency in English and French is a core qualification for this role.
Responsibilities
- Actively promote the recognition in subordinate staff that safety of personnel is of the higher priority and cannot be compromised
- Select, train and develop suitable candidates within the project controls discipline
- Accountable for accurate project controls within the business unit
- Manage, lead and mentor departmental subordinates to ensure that the operational deliverables consistently reach or exceed target in their areas of accountability
- Review and understand tender or completed proposal documents for mining construction projects, including bills of quantities, general conditions of contract and special conditions of contract
- Compile and define the controls baselines for projects, including the development of project execution plans and project specific controls procedures
- Define and coordinate with key site personnel training programs prior to the initiation of every contract to ensure that the Area/Project Manager is fully conversant with the requisite implantation programs and key performance deliverables
- Administrative set up new projects, including timekeeping, reporting, code of accounts and document management
- Ensure that the Management of Change process is being maintained and integrated with Redpath’s policies, procedures, contracts and financial system (where required)
- Participate in compiling, updating and tracking project costs and schedule (InEight Estimate, InEight Cloud Suite, Primavera and/or MS Projects, Oracle ERP, Power BI or other accounting systems used by Redpath).
- Implement and maintain earned value management systems
- Prepare management information reports for site and office personnel incorporating both physical advances and financial data to engender a profit focussed culture on projects
- Monitor and support the proper use and implementation of the code of accounts on projects
- Arrange meetings, including compiling and circulating proper project meeting minutes
- Monitor trends obtained from site statistics and advise management of issues potentially impacting on policies, procedures, schedule, costs, project scope, risks and/or safety related issues
- Participate in analyzing construction change orders and/or claims
- Prepare and finalize the close-out reports, including maintaining historical costs and production information in a prescribed format
- Develop operating and capital budget plans consistent with the goals of the business and the direction of the senior executive team
- Provide project controls assistance to other business units and/or subsidiary companies as directed
Qualifications Education Required: University degree in a related scientific, business or engineering field
Preferred: University degree (business or engineering) in quantity surveying, cost estimating or mining. Additional qualifications and/or certification(s) in quantity surveying (professional QS), project management (PMP), contract administration and key performance indicator measurement will be considered an asset.
Work Experience Required: 7 Years of post-graduate field and/or office based project accounting, estimating or controls experience related to underground construction projects or operational mining environment, with knowledge of project management, construction contracts, reporting and data manipulation
Preferred: 10 Years project controls experience in mining shaft sinking, lateral development, raiseboring, mechanized raise climbing or similar underground construction projects with a sound knowledge of contract principles and data manipulation into management information
