SALARY RANGE: Job Class VI - $79,451.840 - $93,710.24 (2026 Rates)

SUPERVISOR: C.E.R.B. Supervisor, Patrol Staff Sergeant

POSITION SUMMARY:

The 911 Communicator’s primary function is to receive, comprehend, respond and process information involving calls for service and entering and removing CPIC data, in accordance with the policies and procedures established by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Board and the Chief of Police.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Training and experience in police emergency dispatching
  • Working knowledge of CPIC, ICAD, and RMS NICHE
  • Demonstrated judgment and assessment skills
  • Willingness to complete required training, including out of town training
  • Willingness to work different shifts
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven ability to respond effectively and professionally in stressful situations
  • Analytical skills with problem solving abilities
  • High regard professionalism and work ethics

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Receiving and processing 9-1-1 police, fire and ambulance calls for service.
  • Determining the complexity of calls for service, selects channels and dispatching police
  • Monitoring all radio channels including tactical channel and equipment associated with dispatch
  • Receiving and processing business call inquiries
  • Contacting additional emergency services pertaining to calls for service
  • Accessing ICAD, retrieving and entering data for service, monitoring police activity
  • Performing CPIC/NICHE checks assist for officer’s safety
  • Notifying Suspension Control Centre for service of suspensions
  • Updating and amending BOLO
  • Entering/removing CPIC data pertaining to charged persons, stolen/recovered vehicles, missing/located persons, warrants executed and DVSIP entries
  • Retrieving, recording, distributing CPIC messages, provincial and zone alerts for Police Service staff
  • Performing CPIC queries, zone alerts and provincial alerts for officers and Police Service staff
  • Initiating 9-1-1 emergency functions through Bell Canada to determine the caller, residence and nature of call
  • Operating TTY telephone for the hearing impaired
  • Controlling and operating the security doors and Police Service alarm systems. Viewing monitors used for security of building, property and prisoner cells
  • Maintaining hard copy bulletin boards and records necessary information for wrecker calls, trespass books, fingerprint dates, EARS books, bears, funeral, coroner list for call outs.
  • Reporting major and unusual incidents to the Patrol Staff Sergeant as soon as possible and maintain control of the situation under the direction of the Staff Sergeant.
  • Notifying proper authority concerning any equipment failure
  • Maintaining familiarity with Directives, Policies and other Police Service correspondence
  • Attending training courses as required
  • Training new employees
  • Retrieving and providing information on a need-to-know basis to other agencies such as Customs, Immigration and other police agencies
  • Performing any other duties as assigned by the supervisor
