What you'll do

The BC Hydro Site Engineering team has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a new Site Engineering Team Lead to

help us meet the capital plan. The Site Engineering team works on our construction projects and performs resident

engineering and commissioning coordination - making sure that construction and commissioning are done right. If you are a

self-starter who enjoys working with people on large and complex construction projects and working on new BC Hydro

transmission and generation stations equipment, then we invite you to join the Site Engineering team.

This is a unique opportunity to lead a new electrical team – dedicated to the upcoming capital construction program across

British Columbia. Over the next 10 years we are taking on an ambitious plan to redevelop several generation and

transmission facilities. This role will give you an opportunity to lead and develop a field-based electrical engineering team

supporting BC Hydro’s key facilities while demonstrating your technical and leadership skills and ability to work closely with

other Construction, Engineering, Equipment Testing and Commissioning, and Maintenance teams.

This position acts as a functional manager and technical expert to a team of 4-8 site engineers with a diverse background in

electrical engineering. The Site Engineers help develop and oversee all technical aspects of field engineering including

development of plans, construction schedules, procedures, and construction methods and systems on high complexity and

large construction projects.

The Site Engineering Team is also responsible for working with contractor teams to assure contract compliance, the

application of accepted construction technology and standards and to sort out non-compliance in the field by bringing

design and construction people together. We work closely with design offices and project engineering teams to get this

done, completing field review as their delegates and help assure that design intent is met.

  • You lead and manage a team of electrical engineers and consultants who are at the heart of the construction and

commissioning, making sure that team members have the required expertise and tools to complete the work with high

quality, value, on schedule, and on budget. You manage the team performance to meet objectives.

  • Be a leader in working safely and efficiently. Demonstrate strong commitment to safety. Create a culture where safety is

first, and where employees are recognized for safe performance and compliance with safety regulations and safe work

practices.

  • Develop a staffing strategy and recruit, select, and promote staff, and/or procure consulting services. Coach/mentor and

develop your team. You focus on building the engineering capabilities of the team, ensuring that your team has the training,

staffing, and long-term expertise we need to be at the top of our game to take on tough technical problems and meet our

capital plan.

  • You use your technical expertise in equipment design, installation, and commissioning to provide technical leadership,

instruction, and guidance to the team.

  • Your team use their technical expertise to get answers to complex technical queries and problems by bringing design

engineers and contractors together to keep construction on track.

  • Lead by example by demonstrating BC Hydro’s commitment to a diverse, respectful, and inclusive workforce. Create an

environment where everyone can be themselves at work.

  • Ensure the team adheres to BC Hydro and industry standards, policies, practices and procedures. You are an advocate

for professional practice and ensure team members are knowledgeable about professional practice requirements and that

their work complies with the Engineers and Geoscientists BC Quality Management Guidelines.

  • Act as a positive role model for the business by fostering teamwork and engage team members in contributing to our

company goals.

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with equipment suppliers, consultants, contractors, and other parts of

BC Hydro. This includes Asset Management, Program and Contract Management, Project Delivery, Capital Construction,

Real-time, Transmission/Distribution and Generation System Operations (RTO, TDSO, GSO), and Stations Field

Operations to advance the delivery of BC Hydro’s capital plan.

  • Be a Professional of Record (POR), checker or reviewer for assigned projects and delegated scopes, including technical

reports, estimates, and commissioning energization procedures in alignment with BC Hydro’s professional practice

guidelines.

  • Establish technical work procedures and develop engineering standards/guidelines to support the capital program.

Review, enhance and develop methods, procedures, and technical standards to take advantage of new technology.

Contribute to the review and improvement of standards and procedures in collaboration with discipline owners and design

authorities.

  • Investigate and analyze challenges or unusual problems of an engineering and project nature, then develop alternatives,

evaluates risks and apply innovative solutions.

What you bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities; although other disciplines will be

considered based on experience.

  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or Professional Licensee Engineering (P.L.Eng) with Engineers and

Geoscientists BC (EGBC).

  • A minimum of 10 years’ progressive experience in engineering. Experience in hydro power generation is required,

experience with transmission and protection and control is a significant asset.

  • Proven field experience leading large-scale maintenance or capital work

  • Demonstrated decision-making skills that include sound risk management, business, and technical judgement.

  • Demonstrated strong leadership, relationship management, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills, and able to prepare

and deliver appropriate direction to the team with clear and concise oral and written communication.

  • Approachable, takes initiative, and is a proven problem solver. You have shown you can take initiative in identifying,

pursuing, and being persistent in championing process improvements to make work easier and more efficient.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead or has performed in a leadership capacity.

  • Strong strategic thinking and business planning skills.

  • You’ve been successful, creative, and can show how you have influenced outcomes and met objectives.

  • Demonstrated technical writing and presentation skills. A clear communicator comfortable with making presentations to

peers and senior management.

  • A strong electrical aptitude.

  • A solid understanding of project management and the project management life cycle.

  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
