The Opportunity:

Reporting to the Deputy Chief of Operations and Training, the Training Officer will facilitate the development, implementation and delivery of a comprehensive training program that meets the requirements of the Airdrie Fire Department.

The Training Officer, in conjunction with Platoon Chiefs, will oversee the development and quality assurance of lesson plans, evaluations, programs and other instructional material and training as required.

Responsibilities include:

  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) and in-house instructor of selected training program curriculum
  • Provide input into the short/ medium/ long-term planning of department training requirements
  • Evaluate and promote consistency and effectiveness of training practices throughout the department
  • Plan and deliver the Firefighter Recruit Training Program
  • Develop instructional materials and associated training materials as required
  • Prepare and administer advancement examinations and participate in advancement evaluations
  • Prepare and maintain accurate reports, records, correspondence and summaries of training activities and manage inquiries regarding qualifications
  • Attend and participate in appropriate job-related training and educational events as well as appropriate department related planning and informational meetings
  • Maintain proficiency in the operation of all necessary technology to fulfill job requirements
  • Ensure training facilities and equipment are adequately maintained
  • May also assist in the co-ordination, direction and planning of other department operated programs
  • Maintain personal readiness to support Operational needs if and when required

You Bring:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Over 18 years of age

  • Legally eligible to work in Canada

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Ability to pass a criminal record and vulnerable sector check

Required Certifications:

  • Minimum nine (9) years full time experience in a career fire service
  • Experience in all aspects of fire and emergency services delivery with an extensive knowledge of modern equipment, technology and methods as applied to fire and emergency services delivery in a municipal structure
  • NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter Level 2
  • NFPA 1002 Pump & Aerial
  • NFPA 1041 Level 1 Fire Service Instructor
  • NFPA 472/1072 Hazardous Materials Awareness & Operations
  • Practice permit with Alberta College of Paramedics - Primary Care Paramedic (PCP)
  • Valid Class 1, 2, or 3 driver’s license with Q air brake endorsement

o Must have less than 7 demerit points at time of application

Considered Assets:

  • NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor Level 2

  • NFPA 1021 Fire Service Officer qualifications

  • Incident Command Blue Card

  • Post-Secondary educational diploma(s), or degree(s) in Fire Service Administration, Public and/or Business Administration or other relevant programs

  • Advanced computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office suite

  • Proven ability communicating in a tactful, clear and effective manner, in person, in writing and on the phone

  • Proven ability to establish effective working relationships both internally and externally

  • Strong oral and written presentation skills

  • Ability to manage time and workloads to meet timelines and objectives

  • Ability to work independently

Fitness Evaluations:
Applicants moving forward will have to complete, or provide a record of completion for one of the following fitness evaluations. The results of these tests will be considered valid for 12 months.

The fitness evaluation is conducted at the expense of the applicant. The cost of this test is approximately $200.00 - $400.00

  • Alberta College of Paramedics practice permit
  • Criminal Record Check including Vulnerable Sector Search

A pre-employment medical evaluation will be conducted as a condition of employment for external candidates.

This position is psychologically and physically demanding and applicants must be physically able to perform the duties of the position in all weather conditions.

Successful candidate must meet all our immunization requirements (list available upon request).

Training Officer will work a 40-hour week.

The Training Officer position is part of an employee group that is represented by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 4778. Compensation based on current Collective Agreement.
