Position Overview:
Resumes are being accepted for the position of Roll Off Operator with the Solid Waste Resources Division. Guided by the goals and objectives of the City’s Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, service, inclusion, wellness and learning, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Vision for an inclusive, connected and prosperous city.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Operate roll off truck at the Waste Resource Innovation Centre & within the City of Guelph and surrounding area.
- Comply with all Federal, Provincial and City regulations, policies and procedures; maintain a clean and safe vehicle.
- Perform pre and post trip inspections of assigned vehicle and reports all issues requiring corrective review/repair. Complete hours of service documents.
- Ensure vehicle is operated in a manner consistent with City expectations for the Fleet, minimizing maintenance issues.
- Ensure vehicle is operating correctly while in use and notifies Supervisor of any concerns.
- Report any unsafe situations/service calls to the Supervisor before attempting service.
- Notify Supervisor of any incidents, accidents, injuries or property damage.
- Comply with the regulations and requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act Section 28, Duties of a worker, Highway Traffic Act, and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change Environmental Compliance Certificates.
- Move and dump waste containers within the various buildings on site, outside in the SWR yard, and to off site locations as required.
- Assist collecting curbside waste when service is not needed on site, including 3 stream collection with side-arm operated vehicles, and rear-end loader truck for yard waste.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and requirements
- Experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion of a Grade 12 diploma and 1-2 years roll off experience operating DZ vehicles in live traffic conditions. Candidates with equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- A valid Class DZ drivers licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their license is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
- Excellent customer service & interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with the public diplomatically.
- Good organizational skills with the ability to work on your own and in a team environment.
- Good oral and written communications skills with the ability to take notes and keep accurate records.
- Must be able to perform physical work (e.g. lifting to a maximum of 20 kg and working in all types of weather conditions).
- Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Highway Traffic Act,
- Must be able to work alone and with supervision.
Hours of work
Any five (5) consecutive shifts of eight (8) consecutive hours between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
