Your role

CBC Nova Scotia is looking for an associate producer based in Sydney to lead the day-to-day Information Morning dayside team.

You will be a key member of the team, shaping what airs on morning radio — bringing fresh ideas, sharp editorial skills and a keen understanding of audio storytelling.

This position is part of a small team of journalists, working closely with Producer, Don Munro, Senior Producer, David Burke and reporting to CBC Nova Scotia News Executive Producer, Ken MacIntosh.

You believe in an inclusive approach to journalism. The show informs, entertains and speaks to the people of Cape Breton. Your job is to enhance the connection and grow the audience by reaching underrepresented communities and more diverse and younger audiences.

You are a team player and work well with others. You lead with compassion and empathy.

CBC offers access to training, mentorship and career development over time to employees along with a structured onboarding process. There are also several Employee Resource Groups at CBC.

This role requires full time on site presence.

Key tasks:

  • Lead the dayside morning radio team in Sydney. This is a dayside Mon-Fri shift.
  • Assign which stories will air on the morning radio show, guide their creation, and edit them before they air.
  • Research, write and produce original story ideas that will engage and inform the audience.
  • Deepen our community connections and elevate the voices of equity deserving groups.
  • Occasionally present stories on-air, providing analysis and context to enhance the audience’s understanding of issues.
  • Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop and break stories, plan features and coordinate long-term coverage
  • Communicate with other producers and leaders and ensure radio content has a home on digital, social and television.

Qualifications

As AP, you will bring the following skills and experience to the CBC:

  • Graduation from University or Community College in a journalism program or other relevant course of study or equivalent industry or lived experience.
  • Ability to assign, manage and motivate staff, coordinate with other departments in a productive manner, and mediate disputes as they arise.
  • High-level knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Demonstrated professional experience using various news platforms, including strong audio editing and storytelling experience.
  • Knowledge of multimedia journalism - including text, social and video
  • Knowledge of and connection to equity-deserving communities across Cape Breton.
  • Commitment to community coverage in-line with our local service expansion goals and inclusion of all equity-deserving groups in our storytelling.
  • Demonstrates the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture
  • Familiarity with live broadcasts, including ability to adapt to breaking and developing news
  • Ability to generate original story ideas and creative treatments
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure, tight deadline multi-platform environment
  • A natural interest and curiosity in current and emerging technologies
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Flexibility in hours, including overtime, evenings and weekends

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
