Position Summary
The Control System Designer will be responsible for preparing and supporting electrical control system designs, taking projects from specifications and P&IDs to fully functional automation systems. This position requires both strong technical design capability and hands-on involvement during commissioning and troubleshooting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Designs control system hardware from IO lists, functional specifications, and P&IDs.;
- Perform load calculations and size components such as power supplies, transformers, motor starters, and VFDs.
- Create detailed wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Select and prepare specification sheets for instrumentation and analyzers (flow, pressure, temperature, pH, DO, conductivity, TOC).
- Ensure all designs comply with CSA, NFPA, and UL electrical codes and safety standards.
- Support machine start-up, PLC power-up, networking, and troubleshooting.
- Participate in project meetings, design reviews, and liaise with clients, contractors, and local authorities.
What We’re Looking For:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial electrical controls design.
- Strong working knowledge of CSA C22.1 Canadian Electrical Code Part 1, CSA C22.2 286 Industrial Control Panels and Assemblies, NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, and UL 508A Standard for Industrial Control Panels.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Highly organized and structured, with the ability to meet project milestones.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with other departments and clients.
- Experience working under ISO9001 or CSA Z299 quality programs.
- Background in Biotech, Nuclear, Water, or Industrial process equipment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience programming control systems for process automation.
- Experience selecting and installing instrumentation typically used in process systems.
- Experience working under ISO9001 or CSA Z299 quality programs.
- Background in Biotech, Nuclear, Water, or Industrial process equipment.

Team TKMS has an engineering and design team including Process and Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and 3D design. Our QA team includes inspectors for material receiving inspection, fabrication inspection and borescope weld inspection. Our production team includes craftsmen working in a 100% stainless steel fabrication environment, including in-house structural fabrication for frames and platforms, pipe welding and orbital sanitary tube welding.
TKMS is an ASME Code shop operating with licenses for ASME 31.1, 31.3. TKMS has extensive experience working with ASME BPE standards for all Biopharmaceutical projects
Our facility is located 30 minutes from Toronto Pearson International Airport. Situated on 3 Acres, the facility boasts over 60,000 ft² of space including: 50,000 ft² manufacturing with 26'3" clear height and 10,000 ft² Engineering & Admin.
