The Unit

The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (The Centre) is a faculty development unit that works in collaboration with faculty and graduate students to provide leadership, expertise, and support in fulfilling the teaching and learning mission of the University of Manitoba. The Centre contributes to the practice and scholarship of teaching through guidance, collaborative problem-solving, and research with respect to teaching and learning effectiveness, curriculum planning, and institutional policies and infrastructure to optimize the learning and teaching experiences of students and faculty.

The Position

This position will support the Development and Consultation team in the broad work of teaching competence development across the campus. As the Centre continues to take on new initiatives and support existing programming, in support of teaching and learning, this position will continue to support in areas such as teaching consultations, curriculum and course development and delivery, workshop facilitation, and other related responsibilities.

Position Duties: Develop Teaching Competence, Mentoring and Consultation, Faculty Curriculum/Course development and renewal, Design, Development and Delivery of Teaching Workshops, Professional Development and Training. This position will report to the Senior Team Lead – Development and Consultation.

Day-to-day activities include (but are not limited to):

  • Collaborate with the Development and Consultation team to facilitate course and curriculum development and renewal in faculties and departments.
  • Assist faculty and graduate students to integrate sound pedagogical practices into their teaching, courses, and curriculum. This may include consultations, workshops, institutes, and course design.
  • Participate in the design, development and delivery of various teaching development initiatives within the Centre across all modalities (face-to-face, online, hybrid, blended).
  • In conjunction with the Program Coordinator, provide administrative support for all areas of the Graduate Student Teaching Program (GTP) including grading assessments and meeting with students.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Centre to develop and implement educational programs for faculty and graduate students (e.g., teaching certificate programs for various modalities, teaching mentor programs, etc.).
  • Act as point person and manage the work of project team members on designated educational and/or teaching competence projects to organize content and meetings, coordinate project, and produce deliverables when required.
  • Remain current with established and emerging trends in educational development, educational technologies (e.g., Generative AI), and pedagogical practices within post-secondary teaching and curriculum. (Possible travel).

Qualifications: Formal Education and Training

  • A Master’s degree in Education or related field required. (B.Ed or considerable pedagogical experience would be considered an asset)
  • Minimum 3years curriculum development experience
  • Minimum 3 years teaching experience at a post-secondary level

Qualifications: Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated pedagogical knowledge as well as curriculum development and delivery experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide feedback on teaching and course design within post-secondary environments.
  • Exemplary communication skills (both written and verbal) evidenced by the preparation of teaching resources, slides and handouts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of pedagogical practices best suited for post-secondary education.
  • Demonstrated experience developing educational courses and programs.
  • Demonstrated experience working with current learning technologies.
  • Strong interpersonal and diplomacy skills required in working with students, staff, faculty, and the general public.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills and ability to receive feedback.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team is essential
  • Ability to meet deadlines and complete work accurately under tight timelines.
  • Ability to make sound independent judgments and utilize problem-solving abilities with a high degree of professionalism.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of University regulations and policies is an asset.
