Position Summary

Reporting to the Director, Emergency, Critical Care, Patient Flow and Mental Health, the Manager, Patient Flow and ICU provides leadership and operational oversight to ensure patients receive exceptional, timely, and safe care. This role is accountable for clinical excellence, strategic planning, and team leadership across the ICU and patient flow processes.

Working collaboratively with internal teams and external partners, you will lead initiatives that enhance patient flow, reduce ALC days, support Home First strategies, and advance organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Flow Leadership:

  • Develop and implement strategies to improve patient flow across all units, ensuring timely access to care.

  • Oversee the work of Discharge Coordinators and the Nursing Float Pool to support safe and efficient transitions, aligned with Home First principles.

  • Lead initiatives to reduce ALC days and improve discharge planning.

  • Monitor and report on flow metrics.

  • Collaborate with clinical teams to resolve barriers to discharge and optimize bed utilization.

ICU Operations Management:

  • Oversee daily operations of the Basic Level 3 ICU, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality care delivery.

  • Provide leadership for ICU nursing, Respiratory Therapy, and the Critical Care Response Team, ensuring adherence to clinical standards and best practices.

  • Support staff scheduling, resource allocation, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

  • Foster a culture of excellence, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the ICU.

Department/Unit/Program Description

At Ross Memorial Hospital, we are committed to delivering exceptional care and optimizing patient flow across the organization. The Patient Flow team plays a critical role in ensuring timely admissions, transfers, and discharges to support safe and efficient care delivery. This includes oversight of Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC), Discharge Coordinators, and the Nursing Float Pool, which provides flexible staffing support across units. The team also leads strategies to reduce Alternate Level of Care (ALC) days and promote the Home First philosophy, ensuring patients transition to the most appropriate setting as soon as possible.

The ICU is a Basic Level 3 ICU, providing specialized care for critically ill patients requiring advanced monitoring and interventions. The ICU team includes a nurse-led Critical Care Response Team and Respiratory Therapists, who are integral to the delivery of critical care services. This leadership role combines strategic management of patient flow across the organization with operational oversight of ICU (including Respiratory Therapy and Critical Care Response Team).

Essential Qualifications

  • Active Registration in good standing with a professional college (e.g. CNO)
  • Baccalaureate in a health discipline, (Nursing preferred)
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent management experience
  • Minimum five (5) years of hospital experience
  • Certificate in related specialty
  • Current C.P.R. Certification
  • Demonstrates knowledge in clinical practice.
  • Demonstrates excellence in interpersonal, communication, coaching, mentoring and team building skills that facilitate positive interactions among all members of the health care team.
  • Demonstrates a clear understanding of the application of the Registered Health Professionals Act.
  • Demonstrates superior understanding of systems, systems analysis techniques, value analysis process and continuous improvement principles and tools.
  • Possesses highly developed analytical, problem solving, critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrates a strong patient and customer focused philosophy in all interactions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Health Administration
  • Training in Infection Prevention and Control

Hours of Work

Hours of work for the Manager position are 37.5 hours/week, Monday to Friday. You will also be scheduled on a Manager on Call rotation that includes nights and weekends.
