The Senior Manager, Transmission & Distribution Station Engineering is a key leadership role responsible for setting the strategic direction and leading high‑performing, multidisciplinary teams across Hydro One’s Tx and Dx station design portfolio. This role oversees the delivery of safe, cost‑effective, and execution‑ready engineering solutions that enable major capital projects across the province. The Senior Manager drives cultural transformation by fostering innovation, developing talent, and championing continuous improvement, while empowering teams to challenge assumptions and elevate engineering practices toward industry best standards. Through strong collaboration with internal stakeholders and external partners, the role influences decision‑making, advances operational excellence, and plays a pivotal part in modernizing Ontario’s power system to enhance safety, reliability, and long‑term grid performance.

Job Function**:**

  • Support the Director of Engineering and peer managers in implementing the Business Unit's goals/objectives/strategies by providing effective leadership and management direction on conceptual solutioning and power equipment to a team of specialists and support staff including contracted external design firms.

  • Manage, lead and coordinate the engineering efforts to develop conceptual solutions to client’s functional requirement for projects associated with the capital construction program.

  • Develop long-term business plans and forecasts based on understanding customer needs, corporate planning predictions, and changing technologies.

Job Description:

Through collateral relationships with respect to peer managers, and within context provided by the Director of Engineering (i.e., corporate strategies and policies, accountabilities, tasks, budget and programs, compliance and performance targets, expectations for continuous improvement, etc.), provide the following:

  • Manage the work of the conceptual engineering team in the delivery of expert engineering/design/analysis services involved in the development of defined cost effective conceptual designs. The product of this effort is a defined solution that can be executed by a detailed design team, based on standards, requiring little or no strategic engineering. Organize, plan, schedule, direct and coordinate work, assign tasks and monitor the progress of work to conform to schedules.

  • Develop and establish 2 - 5 year business plan for the department.

  • Provide account management, contract administration and resource management.

  • Perform engineering design and drawing preparation for the conceptual solutions.

  • Specify all major power equipment, including standardization, supporting the strategic sourcing for the company, equipment specifications, tendering and evaluation and selection (technical), and ITAP development and acceptance.

  • Delivery of quality control engineering deliverables (estimates, designs, drawings, reports etc.) per scheduled delivery dates.

  • Provide clear expectations and performance measures, meaningful feedback and recognize and reward achievements.

  • Manage the overall department performance through subordinates for work assignment, monitoring and quality assurance of engineering staff within the assigned engineering team. Be responsible for the work of staff assigned to specific projects or sub-projects, giving guidance and direction as necessary, in a working environment which has the philosophy and goals of continuous quality improvement.

  • Lead the development and implementation of conceptual designs to meet and enhance the reliability and performance of the power system and to meet other business needs. Lead the development and preparation of engineering solutions, estimates, specifications and instructions for work on projects of major complexity. Conceptual solutions to address constructability and to meet all health, safety & environmental requirements/regulations.

  • Receive requests for engineering estimates and studies from the manager of Estimating and Project Planning, and others. Assign staff from within the team to develop the engineering solutions. Establish multi-discipline teams for complex projects. Work under the direction of the Project Planner, review the required work scope and communicate engineering requirements.

  • Work closely with others to ensure engineering solutions are aligned with requirement and constraints in the other engineering disciplines.

  • Liaise with peer engineering managers and others to set common project plans and understandings, clarify roles, accountabilities and communication channels on an as needed, project-by-project basis.

  • Liaise with peer engineering managers and others to ensure that deviations during the execution of projects of major complexity are agreed upon and well documented.

  • Be accountable for ensuring performance of acceptance and commissioning tests and acceptance and inspection of vendor facilities, as required. Provide technical support for reported problems on newly installed or operating systems.

  • Monitor engineering work status of the department, provide analysis of progress and issues and provide feedback to the Director of Engineering, Project Planning, Project Engineering, Project Management and others.

  • Support the development and maintenance of standard specifications, policies and procedures for Power equipment and conceptual design instructions.

  • Keep abreast of developments in the field of Power Equipment. Identify and integrate industry best practices as they relate to engineering and benchmark against these. Champion changes to engineering standards and templates as required, in conjunction with Standards & Technology Development group.

  • Evaluate and maintain current knowledge of emerging Power Equipment technologies and commercial services to ascertain suitability for use in the delivery of required systems.

  • Provide ways and means to improve efficiency and economics of systems. Review technical publications and other literature. Communicate with counterparts in similar fields, to exchange views and discuss the merits of improved design and technology.

  • Prepare and monitor short and long term budgets.

  • Conduct special engineering studies and analysis.

  • Contribute in the development and documentation of Engineering & Construction Services engineering processes, systems and practices, including new concepts, working culture (people acceptance), philosophy, operating and maintenance of standards and engineering policy in the dynamically changing field of utility engineering.

  • Provide root cause analysis and perform failure investigations and root cause analyses.

  • Ensure worker and staff safety, work quality and accuracy and conformance to governing regulations.

Managerial Accountabilities**:**

  • Manage the unit and achieve the targeted results through diligent and accurate oversight of the financial aspects of the department.

  • Develop & maintain a team of subordinates with capability to deliver the accountability of the department: Evaluate the effectiveness of the section's engineering capability through various means (capability assessments, quality control, etc.) and recommend changes to enhance performance.

  • Interview and select candidates for staff positions.

  • Assess the performance of staff and conduct performance appraisal interviews, as required. Initiaterecommendations on hiring, firing, transfer and promotion of staff, etc.

  • Recruit, develop and maintain staff with the necessary type and quality of skills to deliver required engineering services levels in the context of E&CS and Hydro One Networks' strategies, plans and objectives.

  • Assume leadership roles in the management and development of skills training programs required to enhance staff capability.

  • Monitor utilization of specific system resources.

  • Evaluate problem areas.

  • Anticipate future requirements.

  • Advocate the acquisition of appropriate tools and skills to optimize the performance of staff.

  • Managing the deliverables of the Department.

  • Set the framework of policies, strategies and procedures as the context for subordinates (i.e. corporate strategies and policies, accountabilities, tasks, budget and programs, compliance and performance targets, expectations for continuous improvement, etc.).

  • Know and ensure own and subordinates’ compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, and all corporate policies and procedures, and generally accepted practices relating to the work of the unit.

  • Establish a two-way working relationship with subordinates to solicit their views on conditions and potential changes affecting their work, and continuous improvement opportunities.

  • Provide leadership to the department to ensure collaboration and communication with peers and client groups to achieve corporate and project goals.

  • Establish expectations within the department to ensure that actions taken by the department facilitate the success of other departments, business units.

  • Ensure client and peer requirements are understood and respected n the execution of work.

  • Provide a safe and healthy work environment.

  • Provide subordinates with appropriate knowledge, skills, information, work procedures and equipment to facilitate responsible behaviour which will protect their safety and contribute to their health.

  • Provide a work environment and facilities where health and safety incidents are minimized.

  • Provide a work environment that supports and values diversity, and is free from harassment.

  • Know and ensure subordinates comply with all legal and regulatory requirements, corporate policies and procedures, and generally accepted practices relating to their work.
