New Directions is a non-profit social service agency offering a wide range of resources and services that provide supports in a variety of settings and foster people’s hopes and dreams in their communities. The organization’s mission is to provide responsive and individualized services that foster the hopes and dreams of people and their communities. Throughout the organization, staff and leadership work in many fields and in variety of shifts to deliver quality service and supports.
Opikihiwawin responds to the needs of Indigenous adoptees and foster people in all stages of their lives by providing cultural education, supports and advocacy. Opikihiwawin requires a summer mentor to assist instructors in the Community Arts Summer Drop-In program for Indigenous youth.
Position details as follows:
Term dates: July 6, 2026 - August 28, 2026
Responsibilities include:
- Carrying out summer program activities with participants, such as film/art projects, storytelling, traditional crafts, and Indigenous centered health and wellness activities.
- Gathering and preparing supplies and snacks as needed for the drop-in program.
- Assisting with and participating in cultural activities and duties as assigned (e.g. medicine picking, full moon ceremonies, drum group and performances/outreach in the community).
- Promoting the summer/fall program to attract future participants through community outreach.
- Establishing supportive and encouraging relationships with participants.
- Assisting in data collection, documentation and research.
Qualifications/Requirements include:
- Must be between the age of 15-29 and eligible to work in Canada (this position is part of the Canada Summer Jobs initiative).
- Related education and/or experience.
- A demonstrated knowledge, awareness and sensitivity to Indigenous cultures, languages and traditions.
- The ability to establish boundaries and set limits.
- A valid Class 5 Driver’s License and access to a vehicle are considered assets.
To reflect the communities that our service supports, Indigenous candidates will be given preference and are encouraged to self-identify.
The salary range for this is a Full-time 8-week Term, 70-hour bi-weekly position is $18.5389 to $25.0290 per hour, depending on education and experience.
The successful candidate will be subject to Criminal Record, Child/Adult Abuse Registry, and Prior Contact checks.

New Directions for Children, Youth, Adults, and Families Inc. is a nonprofit, community-based organization. We provide a wide range of services and supports. These include everything from day programs to 24/7 staffed in-home settings for both adults and children. We also offer cultural and educational programs, job training, therapy, and clinical and counselling services.
We support children, teens, and adults in Winnipeg and Western Manitoba. Individuals may have an intellectual or physical disability. Or they may use American Sign Language to communicate. We encourage each person we support to be as independent as possible. We respect that they can make decisions to the best of their ability.
