Summary of Position
This position will be joining CCI’s Geotechnical Division and will be responsible for supporting primarily pipeline projects by conducting assessments and designs related to watercourse crossings. This includes evaluating hydrologic and hydraulic conditions, determining scour potential, establishing burial depth requirements, and ensuring compliance with Alberta’s Code of Practice for Pipelines and Telecommunication Lines Crossing a Water Body and Code of Practice for Watercourse Crossings. Additionally, the successful individual is expected to undertake field work as needed, related to Hydrotechnical and geotechnical investigation and instrumentation installation activities.
Accountabilities
Hydrotechnical
- Characterize watercourses using field data, LiDAR, and aerial imagery.
- Perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling to estimate peak flows, velocities, and flood levels (e.g., 1:100, and 1:200 year events).
- Assess channel morphology and stability to inform crossing design.
- Calculate design scour depths using accepted methods
- Determine minimum pipeline burial depths below the thalweg to protect against design flood events (typically 1:50 or 1:100 year scour depth depending on the substance conveyed).
- Evaluate lateral erosion risks and recommend mitigation measures.
- Develop hydrotechnical design recommendations for crossings, including trenchless and open-cut methods.
- Recommend erosion protection measures such as riverbed armouring, riprap, or bank stabilization when burial depth cannot be achieved.
- Ensure fish passage and aquatic habitat protection are integrated into designs.
- Ensure all works are conducted outside restricted activity periods and meet water body classification requirements.
- Support Water Act approvals and provide documentation for regulatory review.
- Assist in post-construction monitoring of watercourse crossings for compliance and performance.
- Collaborate with geotechnical, environmental, and pipeline engineering teams.
- Train junior and intermediate staff on hydrotechnical assessment techniques.
Geotechnical
- Supervise and manage, as well as perform (if needed) geotechnical drilling/sampling (as the Ground Disturbance Supervisor) using solid/hollow stem auger, mud/air rotary, ODEX, and coring techniques; for ground-supported (truck or track-mounted) and/or helicopter-supported drilling programs. Field work as required.
- Undertake site visits, as required to assess drilling equipment access to planned borehole locations.
- Perform installation of geotechnical instrumentation and assist with data analysis and reporting.
- Assist with the preparation of geotechnical reports.
- Manage geotechnical scope for various projects and meet project deadlines.
- Maintain effective working relationships with clients, contractors, staff and other employees.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 4 years of Hydrotechnical Consulting experience.
- Experience related directly to pipeline geotechnics, road design, slope stability and instrumentation monitoring and installation will be considered a strong asset.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering with a hydrotechnical engineering background. Graduate degrees (Masters) in hydrotechnical or geotechnical fields would be a strong asset.
- Familiarity and previous experience using ArcGIS are considered a strong asset.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in AB (APEGA).
- An excellent communicator and team player, able to work within a multi-disciplinary team environment with a positive attitude.
- Detail oriented, meticulous, and have strong organizational skills.
- Willingness to learn and take additional responsibilities.
- Driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Be able to travel to remote locations and spend infrequent extended periods of time in the field (project dependent).
