Nature and Scope of Work
This is specialized program support work of moderate complexity in ensuring for the provision of an effective volunteer coordination service for community safety programs. An incumbent of this class recruits, interviews, selects, orients, oversees and schedules a large group of volunteers. The incumbent is responsible for identifying, scheduling and facilitating training for all volunteers, develops and manages the volunteer community safety programs, organizes and participates in a wide variety of community events, and liaises with a variety of internal and external contacts. The work is performed under minimal supervision and considerable independence of judgement and action is exercised within established guidelines and procedures, with the more complex problems and matters of policy referred to a superior. Work performance is reviewed on the basis of the effectiveness of volunteer coordination services.

Develops and manages the volunteer community safety program; coordinates the delivery of services by volunteers; schedules and deploys volunteers; monitors program development; and prepares documentation of duties for volunteers.

Recruits, interviews, and selects volunteers; screens applications; facilities background clearances; provides onboarding; coordinates appropriate training for all volunteers including selecting individuals for specialized training when required; schedules and motivates volunteers engaged in safety program activities; and assigns, monitors, evaluates and oversees the work of volunteers.

Organizes and participates in a wide variety of community events; represents the volunteer program at career fairs and other recruitment events, including sourcing and coordinating of the same; sets up mobile “pop-up” police stations shelters and folding tables; coordinates and provides information materials; and ensures all vehicles and equipment are in proper working order.

Liaises with a variety of contacts such as community service agencies, government bodies, police members and members of the public on matters related to volunteer services; promotes and encourages participation in community safety programs and activities; and prepares and delivers presentations to volunteers and community groups.

Compiles and maintains a variety of files and records; updates policy and procedural manuals; and carries out clerical duties related to the work such as ordering supplies and materials.

Required Knowledges, Abilities and Skills
- Considerable knowledge of the functions, regulations, rules and procedures governing applicable department operations and activities.
- Considerable knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, record keeping, and of computer operation as it relates to the work.
- Sound knowledge of the methods and practices used in directing, orienting and monitoring volunteers.
- Working knowledge of the needs of various related community groups and individuals.
- Ability to recruit, train, motivate, direct and appropriately place volunteers and to monitor, evaluate and oversee performance of same.
- Ability to effectively deal with volunteers and other members of the public in providing information and assistance on various programs.
- Ability to use a variety of office software applications and to compose routine correspondence, prepare forms and lists, and maintain records and files.
- Ability to organize training sessions.
- Ability to assign routine clerical tasks and provide assistance and direction to volunteers as required.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Physical ability to set up mobile “pop-up” police stations including 10x10 shelter, shelter weights, folding tables, transportation of totes containing information materials.
Desirable Training and Experience
Completion of Grade 12 including or supplemented by courses in commercial subjects and volunteer coordination, plus considerable related experience in a police or volunteer environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Licences, Certificates and Registrations

Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia.

Security Clearance shall be obtained and maintained throughout employment.
