About the role

About CANEIL CANEIL is expanding its in-house electrical engineering team and is hiring a Substation Power Systems Engineer to support power system studies and detailed substation design projects. We are seeking candidates based in Calgary or Edmonton, with remote, hybrid, or in-person work arrangements available depending on candidate location, project needs, and team requirements.

We are looking for technically strong professionals who can produce accurate studies and design deliverables and work closely with engineers, project managers, designers, and other disciplines.

Position Summary CANEIL is seeking a Substation Power Systems Engineer with approximately 5+ years of relevant experience in power system studies for substation and industrial facilities. This role is well suited to candidates with a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering. The successful candidate will perform and support power system studies and substation protection and control (P&C) design packages for utility, industrial, renewable, and data centre projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform electrical power system studies for substation, data centre, industrial, solar, and wind farm projects.
  • Conduct engineering calculations such as short-circuit analysis, cable ampacity sizing, load flow analysis, Arc Flash study, protection coordination and AC/DC voltage drop calculations.
  • Perform the engineering design, technical strategy, and delivery of HV and EHV substation projects for power utilities and for the interconnection of renewables and data centres.
  • Support substation studies and calculations, including AC auxiliary system sizing, battery sizing, and voltage drop.
  • Provide construction support and interdisciplinary coordination.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering.
  • At least 5 years of experience in power system studies related to substation and industrial facilities.
  • Experience using SKM or ETAP software to perform short-circuit studies, protection coordination, voltage drop, and arc flash studies.
  • Strong technical verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to read and interpret technical literature.
  • Strong preference for a P.Eng license, or eligibility to obtain a P.Eng license in any province.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with HV and EHV substation projects for power utilities.
  • Experience supporting the interconnection of renewables (solar, wind, and battery storage) and data centres.
  • Experience with arc flash studies and protection coordination.
  • Familiarity with utility standards and multidisciplinary project teams.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary of $100,000–$140,000 per year, based on experience, qualifications, and designation; contract rates available for contract engagements.
