The Opportunity - Summer Student, Farm Worker - Temporary
Olds College Smart Farm has a temporary opportunity for two (2) students to provide support on the Olds College Smart Farm. The anticipated term of employment is May 4, 2026 through August 28, 2026 with full-time hours. Shifts will be scheduled weekly Monday through Sunday, with requirements to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends and evenings.
This is a fantastic opportunity to build practical skills, contribute to the community, and gain valuable industry experience
Key Job Functions
- Daily feeding of livestock plus Olds College owned horses as assigned
- Pen health checks of equine, beef and sheep operations
- Repairing livestock facilities and housekeeping of pens including waters plus shelters
- Assisting with the preparation and distribution of all feed and bedding
- Complete general farm labour duties including assisting with repairs and maintenance of equipment
- Work collaboratively to maintain a safe and welcoming environment on campus
- The employee is responsible for being aware of health and safety responsibilities and expectations as outlined in college policy, departmental and area procedures
- Perform other related duties as required
Education/Experience/Skills/Knowledge Required:
- The successful candidate must be a secondary or post-secondary student prior to and/or immediately following their work period.
- The ability to operate tractors and to drive both standard and automatic transmissions is required.
- A valid driver’s license is essential.
- Due to the physically demanding nature of these positions, the successful candidates must be physically fit and able to lift light to heavy objects (up to 60 lbs.)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team while accepting direction
- Acts ethically, openly, honestly, and respectfully to build and maintain an environment of trust, safety, and well-being
Conditions of Employment:
- Current Criminal Reference check that is free of any offenses.
- Must respect and actively promote health and safety policies.
- In addition, the candidate must provide and wear CSA approved safety footwear and successfully complete WHMIS certification training (training will be provided).
