About the role
Communications Specialist (data)
This is a full-time, 8-week position with standard working hours from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Flexible work arrangements may be considered and discussed with the successful candidate, where appropriate.
This position is supported through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) 2026 program. Applicants must meet the program eligibility criteria, including:
- Being between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
- Being a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person granted refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the job
- Being legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
- Having a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment
Work location: On-site at Distress Centre Calgary, 999 8 Street SW, Suite 500.

What to Expect
The Communications Specialist will optimize SQL queries and database performance, automate tasks using Python, and manage data archiving and lifecycle processes. The role also involves documenting workflows and working with SQL Server and Azure storage.
What You’ll Do

SQL Querying Work
- Analyze slow-running queries and suggest improvements.
- Implement indexing, query refactoring, and partitioning.
- Python Querying and Automation.
Document processes
- Create step-by-step guides for decommissioning and archival.
- Document SQL queries, Python scripts, and automation logic.
Managing Historical Data
- Design and implement archival strategies for historical data.
- Data lifecycle management: retention and cleanup methodologies.
- SQL server databases skills regarding schemas and indexes.
- Azure storage accounts and blob containers.
What You Bring
Qualifications & Experience
- Studies in Data Systems, Information Technology, or a related field
- Familiarity with system administration, database management, or data analytics
- Experience or coursework with business intelligence tools (Power BI, Tableau, etc.)
- Understanding of basic cybersecurity principles and user access control
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
