The Opportunity: Postmedia Edmonton (Edmonton Journal and Edmonton Sun) is seeking a full-time Senior Editor. As a member of the newsroom leadership team, the Senior Editor will play a hybrid role, focusing on an ongoing basis on the implementation of key newsroom initiatives while also having the background and knowledge necessary to fill gaps and help it continue to progress its goals. Excellent people skills, impeccable news judgment and solid leadership abilities are critical. Generating ideas that lead to compelling content for digital, social and print platforms is also a key part of the job.

The Senior Editor position is a key position within the newsroom and this editor must be able to help drive results in a successful multimedia environment. This is largely a remote position, with occasional in-person meetings required.

What you’ll do:

  • Flexible member of the team: When there is a key departure within newsroom leadership, this role will take on a temporary position to continue supporting market objectives awaiting a permanent solution.
  • Hands-on guidance for new hires or employees shifting into new management roles, such as a reporter moving into an enhanced role. This responsibility can take the shape of mentorship meetings, daily discussion of assignments when manager starts in new role, a presence at regular newsroom meetings to support, real-time feedback.
  • Reporting to the Editor in Chief, the successful applicant will support leadership on local strategy pillars, including real time, explainer, and longform approaches and development and execution of key franchise coverage areas.
  • Regular workshop development to build skillset of the next generation of journalists: This includes hands-on support in how we can ensure these workshop skills are both retained by our journalists and measurable in the wider newsroom context.
  • Special projects as assigned: Help with implementation of national strategies in the local newsroom, including FP regionalization and the hub and spoke community integration.

Who you are (qualifications):

  • You will have experience at a daily news organization in a deadline-oriented environment.
  • You are a highly skilled journalist and editor, and have fluency in digital, print and social platforms.
  • You excel as a leader and enjoy working with others, while being adept at balancing a multitude of tasks each day.
  • You are also a team player who enjoys diving into any task that arises.
  • Display an understanding of the ethical issues journalists face and a basic comprehension of relevant legal issues are relevant.
