The Opportunity We are seeking a Senior Municipal Engineer to join and help grow our Edmonton office. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on leading multidisciplinary projects, building client relationships, and developing the next generation of municipal engineers. You’ll play a key role in shaping the team’s technical direction, mentoring intermediate and junior staff, and supporting strategic growth in the Edmonton region
This position is Edmonton based and offers the flexibility of remote work.

What You’ll Do
- Lead the design and delivery of municipal infrastructure projects, including underground utilities, site servicing, stormwater management, roadways, water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, lift stations, reservoirs, and land development.
- Oversee project scopes, schedules, budgets, and quality control.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to intermediate and junior engineers, technologists, and designers.
- Coordinate with clients, regulatory agencies, and internal teams to ensure successful project outcomes.
- Prepare and reviewing engineering reports, design briefs, cost estimates, and tender packages.
- Support business development activities, including proposal writing, client presentations, and relationship building.
- Contribute to long‑term team planning, workload forecasting, and staff development.
- Participate in construction support services, including field reviews and responding to contractor inquiries.
What You’ll Bring
- A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
- 15+ years of municipal engineering experience, ideally in Alberta or Western Canada.
- Registration as a P.Eng. with APEGA (or eligibility for registration).
- Strong technical background in municipal servicing design and familiarity with local standards (City of Edmonton, transportation, surrounding municipalities).
- Proven experience leading projects and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong client relationships.
- A passion for mentoring and developing engineering staff.
- A valid driver’s license and willingness to conduct occasional field work
- Desire to develop and grow a team
What Can We Offer You? The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $164,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
