Overview
The Human Resources Department seeks an individual with outstanding work ethic and a safety-first attitude to join their team on a regular full-time basis. We are seeking a health and safety professional who is poised to expand their HR career as an integral part of our Human Resources team. Reporting to the Director, Human Resources, you are responsible for leading health and safety programs, delivering training, managing WorkSafe claims, leading and managing investigations, audits, and worksite and field inspections. The ideal candidate for this position brings high energy and passion for promoting and implementing progressive Health and Safety best practices and thrives in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or a related field.

  • Minimum 3 - 5 years’ progressively responsible human resources experience in Health and Safety, preferably within a unionized environment.

  • CRSP designation and/or experience working in public sector will be considered an asset.

  • Valid BC driver’s license.

Requirements

  • Provide guidance and direction to departments to ensure compliance with WorkSafe requirements, including responding to orders, developing risk assessments, safe work procedures, and hazard-specific programs, and act as the primary liaison with WorkSafe and other regulatory agencies by maintaining day-to-day contact related to claims, inspections, and compliance matters, including regularly conducting and participating in worksite inspections, safety walkthroughs, and emergency response drills.

  • Perform frequent on-site field safety activities, including hazard identification, monitoring of work practices, verification of controls, and follow-up on corrective actions.

  • Maintain accurate, confidential corporate health and safety records, statistics, and documentation, including testing results, inspection findings, claims, and regulatory reporting data.

  • Administer and maintain the Prismatic Health & Safety system, including employee onboarding, role changes, terminations, access permissions, and troubleshooting user issues.

  • Provide guidance to, and assist the Junior Advisor, Training and Development with the planning, coordination, and administration of the City’s corporate health and safety training program, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives and delivering or supporting training and information sessions, including field-based and operational training, as required.

  • Organize and coordinate employee health protection and monitoring programs, including respiratory fit testing, audiometric testing, flu shot clinics, and related initiatives.

  • Complete and maintain required driver abstract reviews for applicable employees, ensuring confidentiality and legislative compliance.

  • Collaborate with leaders to prepare and provide sick leave, absence, and attendance awareness reporting to support organizational planning and review, and coordinate support for non-occupational, occupational, and graduated return-to-work (GRTW) programs.

  • Conduct research and provide technical expertise and interpretation of occupational health, safety, and industrial hygiene legislation, standards, and best practices to management, Joint Health and Safety Committees, unions, and employees.

  • Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of health, safety, and wellness programs, orientations, audits, inspections, and investigations, with a focus on operational needs.

  • Participate in special projects and represent Human Resources on internal committees, as required.

  • Perform related administrative and transactional duties, which constitute a significant component of the role.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office and related computer applications, with strong organizational, documentation, and data-management skills.

  • Proven ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality, professionalism, tact, and diplomacy

  • Other duties as assigned.
