Position Overview:
Under the direction of the Chair of Student Wellbeing, the College Nurse will work collaboratively with the Health Services Team to deliver professional nursing care that supports student wellbeing, academic success, and lifelong achievement. The College Nurse will oversee the delivery of health services across the College, providing holistic primary health care to students through health education, assessment, support, referral, and health promotion initiatives.
This role includes providing individual health counselling, supporting health promotion and planning initiatives, contributing to school community development activities, and serving as a resource for students and families to support informed and healthy lifestyle choices.
Responsibilities:
- Utilize physical assessment skills to implement a plan of care and treatment for ill or injured students, staff, and visitors to the College
- Develops and evaluates policies, procedures and work standards for the College health program and health services staff
- Assume responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management, and referral activities for students
- Provide for the promotion and maintenance of health, as well as, the prevention of illness and injuries. This facilitates the removal of health-related barriers to learning and promotes an optimal level of wellness for students
- Responsible for direct and indirect care given to students in compliance with the standards of professional practice outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Works in partnership with children, parents and the school community to address identified needs
- Support students as part of a collaborative circle of care, working closely with teachers, administrators, College Counsellor, and other professionals to address complex student needs
- Works collaboratively with the Athletic Therapist to address and treat musculoskeletal injuries
- Works collaboratively with Counselling Services to support the mental health needs of students
- Triage student needs and coordinate college-wide daily care, including the Montessori Matron, Athletic Therapist, and Counselling Services
- Implements programs and services designed to encourage health promotion and prevention activities at the College
- Collaborates with the Athletic Therapist to oversee the concussion management program at the College, including Rowan’s Law, Return to Learn, and Return to Play protocols
- Supports, advises, counsels and refers children experiencing health-related concerns, including, but not limited to, family support; mental health; sexual health, sexuality; drug and alcohol abuse; violence/anger management; abuse; pregnancy; healthy relationships
- Offers help and support to parents when appropriate
- Collaborates with Hamilton Public Health to support and coordinate immunization programs at the College.
- Oversees and works in conjunction with schools and the Public Health Department regarding programs happening at the College
- Document and maintain records of services provided to each student as required by licensing standards, provincial legislation, and school policies;
