About the role

This is a Temporary Full-Time Contract for up to eleven (11) months Sinai Health is looking for a Medical Laboratory Technologist to support our Anatomic Pathology - Surgical Pathology department at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Comprehensive working knowledge of the theory, methodologies and procedures in Histopathology to perform analytical testing with accuracy and precision; must demonstrate competency and accountability in decisions and actions.

In This Role You Will

  • Perform procedures related to analytical testing of patient samples according to established policies and procedures, while ensuring accuracy and precision. Performs advance and special testing under guidance
  • Be accountable for all diagnostic results and procedures that you perform
  • Report and call critical or relevant abnormal results and document according to the established protocols
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of test results, stains, instruments and observes and reports poor results or malfunctions of any equipment to designated technical staff
  • Perform all quality control procedures and basic troubleshooting whenever results are beyond expected or allowable limits according to established protocol. Reports unresolved problems to the Senior Technical or Supervisory staff
  • Assist in the maintenance of the work station. Performs the required daily and weekly routine preventative maintenance on equipment, according to the established protocol, and documents these results
  • Communicate any testing downtimes to units and advise on expected time of resumed testing; use of independent and professional judgement and knowledge to respond to enquiries
  • Assist in inventory control of reagents and supplies; prompt notification of any depleted inventory
  • Receive, accession and process specimens in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Observe laboratory safety practices at all times
  • Assist in orientating and demonstrating procedures or technology to new staff or students as requested
  • Exhibit good time management, multitask, monitor and prioritize workload in response to demands of urgent and STAT testings
  • Rotate through relevant areas and workstations and shifts; may work unsupervised in off hour shifts, subject to evaluation of knowledge and competency
  • Learn new procedures as required and perform other duties as assigned
  • Ensure the accuracy, legibility and completeness of results submitted for reporting where applicable
  • Prepare reagents, buffers, calibrators, quality control and other materials as required
  • Perform test/procedures related to the method evaluation, test optimization and validation
  • Use supplies judiciously to eliminate wastage, monitors inventory and orders supplies
  • Report workload units not captured electronically
  • Observe and follow the processes, policies and procedures of the quality management system of corresponding discipline(s)
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required

Job Requirements Mandatory

  • Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO)

Preferred

  • 2 years of experience in Histology

Skills and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated problem recognition and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management and prioritization skills
  • Follow the CMLTO code of professional conduct
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance and attendance record
