Veterinary Extern - Emergency
About the role
Applicants must be third or fourth-year students of accredited domestic or international veterinary schools, pursuing a DVM, VMD, or foreign equivalent. Fairfield Animal Hospital is the only 24-hour emergency animal hospital in the BC Southern Interior. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including all holidays. We do not book routine appointments such as vaccine updates, spays or neuters; we operate solely on an emergency triage basis.
We currently utilize Ultrasound (Afast/Tfast), CT, Digital radiography and in-house lab (including blood gases, coag panels) for the majority of our diagnostics. Our technical team is highly skilled and motivated, the majority of the team is trained in Recover CPR and teamwork is our focus.
An externship experience at an Ethos Emergency Hospital gives students real-life clinical experience in an emergency and critical care setting, and the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills while working alongside experienced clinicians, criticalists (site dependent), and/or current interns and residents. Hands-on skills that may be practiced or observed include TPR’s, examinations, anesthesia, surgical procedures, catheterization, ultrasound, and other diagnostic procedures as available.
Most externship experiences range from two to eight weeks depending on student and hospital schedules. Externships at Fairfield Animal Hospital are offered to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.
About Abbotsford Animal Hospital
NVA Canada is a rapidly growing community of Canadian veterinary hospitals and passionate professionals dedicated to serving the local needs of pets and their owners. For the love of animals and the people who love them.
Globally, the NVA community tops 1500 veterinary hospitals and pet resorts in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. Over 35,000 veterinary professionals work to improve the well-being of patients by providing progressive and compassionate veterinary care. In Canada, we have over 140 practices in every province, coast-to-coast.
Since the first hospital joined NVA in 1997, founding veterinarian Dr. Stanley Creighton has emphasized support for the local medical standards established by individual doctors and practices. He has always believed that when veterinarians craft strategies specific to their own hospitals and communities, high quality patient care and client services follow.
This vision for local empowerment and servant leadership continues at NVA Canada today. We are partners in possibility, making new professional tools and resources available to hospitals, supporting with recruiting, administration and management, and caring for caregivers so the Canadian community can continue to grow and thrive.
