Payworks develops proprietary, integrated SaaS-based products in the payroll, human resources, and time and attendance space. We create, deploy, and maintain our own solutions - and the data that powers them needs to be structured, secure, and built to scale. We are seeking an experienced Data Architect to join our team and play a key role in establishing and maintaining best practices around data across our organization. This individual contributor role requires a strategic thinker who can design robust data solutions, ensure data quality and governance, and serve as a trusted advisor to stakeholders throughout the company.

ARCHITECT. GOVERN. LEAD – IT’S WHAT YOU’LL DO

+Define our data architecture- Design and maintain the organization's data architecture, including data models, database designs, and data integration patterns. Create and maintain architecture diagrams, data flow documentation, and technical specifications that set the standard for how data moves and lives across Payworks.

+Champion data governance & quality- Establish and promote data governance frameworks and best practices across the organization. Collaborate with business units to understand data requirements, ensure data integrity, and lead efforts to identify and resolve data quality issues and inconsistencies between systems.

+Provide technical leadership- Serve as an expert in the organization around SQL Server architecture, optimization, and best practices. Design and oversee cloud-based data solutions using Azure technologies, and review and approve database designs to ensure they meet performance, scalability, and security requirements.

+Collaborate & communicate across the organization- Partner with IT teams, developers, and business stakeholders to translate complex technical concepts into clear, actionable recommendations. Mentor and guide team members on data architecture principles and ensure data considerations are addressed in cross-functional projects.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED

  • Minimum 10 years of experience in data-related roles, including experience as a Data Architect, Data Analyst, or similar position.

  • Proven track record of designing and implementing enterprise-level data solutions.

  • Demonstrated experience establishing data governance frameworks and best practices.

  • Expert knowledge of SQL Server architecture, including database and EDW design, performance tuning, and optimization.

  • Strong experience with Azure cloud technologies (Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Lake, and similar).

  • Proficiency in data modeling techniques — conceptual, logical, and physical models.

  • Strong understanding of data integration patterns, ETL/ELT processes, and data pipelines.

  • Experience with data security, privacy, and compliance requirements.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities with strong communication skills and the ability to convey technical information to diverse audiences.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively.

  • Experience with Agile methodologies and cross-functional collaboration.

BONUS SKILL SET

  • Experience with modern data platforms and tools such as Power BI, MuleSoft, or Azure tools would be considered an asset.

  • Knowledge of data science concepts, analytics, data warehousing, business intelligence, or master data management (MDM) principles would be considered an asset.

  • Experience in the payroll software or SaaS industry would be considered an asset.
