About the Role

Working within the Institute for Community Prosperity, the Environmental Scan Project Assistant provides an MRU student with hands-on experience in research and facilitation. The Project Assistant will support the development and publication of the 2026 Environmental Scan, with a focus on research and community engagement. This role engages with a wide range of contemporary and emerging issues including economics, politics, civil society, climate change and technology.

The Institute for Community Prosperity is a hub of social innovation, systems-learning and community engagement on campus that bridges the knowledge, wisdom and experience of community with academic learning and scholarly insight. We bring together community, students and faculty from across disciplines, sectors and backgrounds to tackle the complex social and ecological challenges of our time.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR THIS ROLE IS A CURRENT MRU STUDENT. The Project Assistant role is a Flexible position at MRU; the work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of 3-5 hours per week for 10 weeks with an anticipated start date of September 14, 2026.

Responsibilities

Research

Scan for current and emerging issues in areas including economics, politics, civil society, climate change and technology. Working alongside the Community Program and Research Strategist in the collection and preparation of secondary research and data including systems maps and other data visualizations.

Facilitation

Support in planning community consultations that engage MRU faculty to inform the Environmental Scan and its content. Assist in hosting community engagement sessions and connecting with project partners. Attend meetings and take meeting notes.

Qualifications

Strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong interpersonal, organizational and problem solving skills are required. Experience with research including literature reviews and accessing library databases is essential. Experience in event coordination is an asset. Ability to be agile to meet project needs as they evolve. Knowledge and practice in equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and reconciliation will be considered an asset. Comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.

Salary: $21.87 - $27.61 per hour
