Typical Responsibilities

Serve as the Mechanical Discipline Lead and Professional of Record for substation projects
-
Preparation and review of mechanical design drawings including:
- Site layout showing equipment, buildings, diesel gen sets, and fire protection information
- Control and/or other building floor plans and sections showing mechanical equipment including HVAC, plumbing, air/gas piping, gas and fire protection systems
- Plumbing schematics
- HVAC and fire protection controls block diagram
- Diesel Generator building drawings: plan view, elevation views, fire protection and fire suppression system drawings, major equipment drawings (genset and fuel tank)
- Facility and equipment plans, elevations and sections
- Mechanical equipment mounting details including seismic bracing and supports

Preparation and review of detailed design documents and calculations including:
- Design Basis and Standards: Includes design methodology, scope of work, major assumptions (e.g., fire protection requirements and associated risks), applicable provincial, national, and international standards, environmental considerations, site information, and reference documents.
- Equipment and Specifications including the equipment list (including special considerations), mechanical technical specifications, and design calculations supporting equipment selection.
- Diesel Genset Sizing and Fire Separation design encompassing the diesel genset sizing report (including diesel storage requirements) and heat flux calculations for building fire separation distances.
- Testing and Acceptance including equipment acceptance procedures and test protocols.
- Field Review and Documentation including field review plans and reports.

Review of vendor documents against specifications

Lead projects from conception through construction and commissioning, including mentoring junior engineers and designers

Coordinate and oversee the development of resource planning, scope, schedule, and budget for the project discipline team.

Coordinate construction and commissioning activities with utility clients and subcontractors

Respond to requests from construction sites and complete project documentation, including as-builts, calculations, and returning data to clients

Travel to site and liaise with internal groups, external contractors, and clients

Enhance and maintain relationships with internal groups as well as external contractors and clients

Ensuring the latest safe practices and methods are integrated into the design
-
Liaise and work with other engineering disciplines: Civil, Structural, Architectural, Electrical etc.

Expected:
- Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university along with a Canadian Professional Engineering Designation (P.Eng.) or the ability to register as a Professional Engineer with EGBC
- 5 - 10 years of mechanical engineering experience.
- Strong understanding of regulatory codes and standards, including (NBC-AB Edition, NECB, ASHRAE, NFPA, API, SMACNA etc.)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills Authorization to lawfully work in Canada without sponsorship is required
Desirable:

Experience with mechanical design for utility substations, especially projects for BC Hydro is considered an asset.

Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the United States is considered an asset
