About The Role The Business Development Associate will spend the majority of their time proactively engaging with owners and executive teams of software companies, many of which serve engineering, industrial, and Oil & Gas end markets, to originate and develop acquisition opportunities. This role plays a critical front-end function in our M&A strategy and requires both persistence and strong business judgment.
Location : Hybrid out of our downtown Calgary office. Some international travel (<5%) may be required.
Requirements
- This is a business development role requiring maturity, credibility, and comfort engaging with experienced business owners.
- Identify, qualify, and manage a pipeline of small, medium, and large software companies that align with our acquisition criteria.
- Leverage industry knowledge to research and prioritize software businesses serving engineering, industrial, and energy-related markets.
- Proactively initiate and maintain relationships with founders, CEOs, Presidents, and owners through calls, emails, and industry events.
- Conduct market and company-level research to assess strategic fit, business models, and high-level financial and operational metrics.
- Execute consistent outbound prospecting efforts while maintaining thoughtful, tailored outreach - track all prospect interactions, activity, and insights within Salesforce CRM.
- Follow up on inbound and outbound activity in a timely, professional manner.
Experience
- At least 5 to 6 years of professional client facing or sales experience, ideally within engineering, Oil & Gas, energy services, industrial technology or related sectors.
- Experience in business development, sales, corporate development, strategy, software/technology, or exposure to M&A is strongly valued.
- This role is ideal for an experienced technical or industry professional seeking to pivot into M&A and business development while leveraging deep domain expertise.
Ideal Candidate
- Strong Work Ethic: Demonstrated ability to manage a high volume of outreach while maintaining quality conversations. Comfortable with persistence and long sales cycles. Flexibility to work outside standard business hours as needed.
- Entrepreneurial & Self-Directed: Able to work independently, identify patterns, and connect industry knowledge to acquisition strategy.
- Commercial & Persuasive Communicator: Confident speaking with senior executives; able to adapt conversations, ask thoughtful questions, and clearly articulate value.
- Analytical & Curious: Interest in understanding vertical market software business models, recurring revenue dynamics, and industry-specific challenges
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree required (engineering, technical, business, or related field preferred).
