What you’ll do

  • Generation Engineering has a challenging opportunity for a Senior Engineer to join a team of professionals based at BC Hydro's Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC. Engage in the detailed design of electrical utility generation Protection and Control systems:
  • Lead detailed design of protection and control systems for power generation, including hardware design, software application development, and integration of generator, governor, excitation, supervisory control, and associated facility and dam systems.
  • Assume full accountability as Professional of Record, ensuring all designs meet regulatory, safety, and engineering standards, and providing sealed deliverables. - Perform and validate engineering studies, system analysis, and design calculations to ensure reliable and stable operation - Act as Owner’s Engineer, defining requirements and reviewing/approving deliverables from consultants, vendors, and contractors. - Execute project engineering responsibilities, including planning, coordination, risk management, and support through construction and commissioning - Ensure quality, compliance, and documentation control, including design reviews, change management, and adherence to standards and regulations. - Provide technical leadership and mentorship, overseeing team outputs and supporting development of junior engineers. - Support asset lifecycle activities, including commissioning, troubleshooting, incident investigation, and system upgrades.

What you bring

  • The successful candidate will bring the following qualifications and experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by Canadian Universities
  • A minimum of eight (8) years of relevant engineering experience, including at least five years designing, maintaining, installing, and testing hydroelectric or thermal generation equipment.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or immediate eligibility for registration.
  • Strong technical writing, presentation, communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Proven ability to coordinate multiple projects and effectively plan and manage project resources.
  • Experience preparing technical specifications for tendering, evaluating bids, and making award recommendations is considered an asset.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with strong academic credentials and extensive practical experience in the following areas: o Governor and exciter specification, design, and integration. o Electrical and non-electrical protection systems for generation station equipment.
  • o Automation control hardware and software design using Schneider PLCs and HMIs. o Functional safety systems. o MRS compliance, including NERC CIP. o Electrical system modelling and analytical tools, including frequency response analysis, time-domain simulation, root locus, Bode plots, load flow, and short-circuit analysis.
