Job Description
Position Summary:
Act as liaison between the MSC Head office, MSC Technical office, MSC Canada, agents, terminals, tugs, pilots and transport Canada. The Port Captain is responsible for ensuring effective delivery of vessel operations objectives across our East Canada ports, maintaining great relationship with terminal operators, and providing highly accurate reporting and scheduling to various stakeholders both inside and outside the Agency. The Port Captain is responsible for overseeing all vessel port operations to ensure efficient, safe, and timely handling of vessels. This role demands strong leadership, exceptional organizational skills, and a commitment to operational excellence.
Level of Responsibility
Manage large projects/ processes with limited oversight from manager. Problems faced may be difficult and sometimes complex. Supervise entry or experienced level employees. Drive innovation, and improving processes in domain. May have direct reports. Coaching, reviewing and may delegate work to lower-level professionals.
Qualifications
Key Tasks
- Coordinate docking and undocking of vessels, including scheduling, pilotage, and tugboats. Maximizes berth productivity.
- Maintain communication with ship captains and crew, providing guidance and support as needed.
- Communicate arrival times of pilots and tugs to vessel masters.
- Plan for weather conditions; monitor forecasts, tides, visibility, and icing.
- Manage labor orders for crane operations.
- Implement cost-saving strategies including ways to save fuel on arrival or departure.
- Coordinate bunkering and repair activities when needed.
- Maintain the berthing program application including the proforma berthing elements
- Respond to any crises or emergencies that occur in the port, such as accidents, spills, or security breaches.
- Report vessel incidents and accidents immediately to Geneva and Terminal Operations.
- Maintain Port Specs in MDM system.
- Additional responsibilities may be added or modified to meet changing business requirements.
Skills / Experience:

University degree in Supply Chain, Operations, Ocean transportation, or related field.

8+ years in supply chain, logistics, or port operations.

Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (i.e... Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and technical ease. Knowledge of Power BI (asset).

Strong understanding of export/transshipment workflows and CBSA compliance.

Understanding of TSA rates, cost controls, and financial reporting.

Strong negotiation and reconciliation skills.

Effective problem‑solving and decision‑making skills, with the ability to resolve operational issues quickly and independently in critical situations.

Proficiency with operational systems/tools, including cargo management platforms, and reporting tools.

Strong organizational and time‑management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment.

Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, capable of maintaining productive working relationships with terminals, vendors, and internal teams.

Bilingual (English and French), an asset.
